It’s okay for young people to want to do well at school, whether that’s in exams, sports, or other activities. Setting high targets can be motivating and help some adolescents to realise their potential. But when standards become exceedingly high, it can start to affect a young person’s well-being – particularly if they tend to focus on their mistakes and are self-critical when standards are not met. Perfectionism is a risk factor for eating disorders and can help maintain anxiety, depression, and OCD. Perfectionism at school can sometimes be a clue that a young person is facing other mental health challenges. This blog explores what perfectionism is, why it develops, and how it can affect young people’s mental health. It also touches on how therapy can treat and address perfectionism to help young people recover and thrive. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle of daily life. We all do it! Even in that daily hustle, it is important to remember that our mental well-being is just as important as our physical health. Taking care of ourselves isn't selfish - it is a necessity. Whether it is taking a walk, calling a friend, or just setting some time aside for yourself, we can all prioritize more with our mental health. I attended a Summit a few weeks ago about Securing the Mental Health of America's College Students. It was filled with lots of great info and conversation but not enough of working to break down the stigma around mental health. Let's break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a culture of compassion and support. It's okay to not be okay sometimes, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. I am outspoken and don't hide that counseling is a part of my journey and thankful for it. Remember, none of us are alone in this journey. We are in this together, and by taking care of ourselves, we can be our best selves for others. You matter. You will always matter. And your mental health matters. #MentalHealthMatters #mentalhealthmonth

Odyssey Young Life Coaching - Life and confidence coach for children and teenagers - helping to build their confidence, self-worth and emotional intelligence.
My latest article for Brainz Magazine is now online. In this article, I focus on children’s mental health, looking at the impact of social media and the growing trend of boys wanting to grow up to be YouTubers. As of November 2023, almost half a million young people were either receiving treatment or were on a waiting list for help with their mental health. Why has children’s mental health got so bad? We are barely putting a plaster on it, let alone addressing the root cause. We live in a society that doesn’t want to teach people basic, practical psychology or to know how to master our minds and emotions. We are constantly living in a state of reaction rather than pro action. My mission, is to teach children these skills and to empower them to make positive change in their life. 13th-19th May is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek2024, and the theme this year is Movement: Moving more for your mental health. We know that being physically active is great for our mental wellbeing, as well as for our physical health. And we also know that children who get to play out regularly are more active than those who don't have that opportunity. In fact, children are 3-5 times more active during a play street than they are on a 'normal' day after school - so it's not surprising that living on a play street is good for children's mental health! "Given these new realities, how can parents and community leaders help teens improve their mental health? Perhaps the best place to begin finding solutions is to listen to the young people who are struggling when they voice what they need." Researchers from Common Good Labs, Crisis Text Line, and The Brookings Institution analyzed more than 80,000 anonymous conversations from young people discussing the resources they sought most often for their mental healthcare. What experts found was that the top three cited things had all been linked with improved mental health in medical studies: opportunities for social connection, creating and performing art, and professional mental health services. https://lnkd.in/eH4_5vAd #MentalHealth #AdolescentMentalHealth #Research

Today is Parents Mental Health Day here in the UK. We do not speak enough about the Mental wellbeing of parents and carerers and how this can impact the humans they care for. Research has shown that one of the key contributors to childhood trauma is the poor mental health of a parent or career. As we celebrate Parents mental health day today, it’s a call to action to prioritize our mental wellbeing, so that we are in the right state of mind for our calling as parents. This year's theme, "Creating Positive Relationships," resonates deeply. I believe the most crucial relationship is the one with oneself. Again, we are reminded of the need for self-care and mental wellness as it sets the foundation for nurturing positive connections with our children and loved ones. So my question to you today is, how do you care for your mental health? How are you ensuring that you are in sound mind? I’d love to hear your thoughts. 💜 Dr. Vivian Okoye #Psychologist #Traumatherapist #mentalhealth

Is the decline in young people’s mental health in developed countries only seen in the post-millennial cohort, and does it recover with age, or is it a more permanent and worrying trend? A study led by University of Sydney tracked the mental health of a cohort of Australians for 20 years in hopes of answering this question, and the results reveal that it’s not only Gen-Z but also earlier generations heading into their 40s and 50s that are experiencing a decline in mental health since 2010. 💚 If the mental health of young people is important to you, then this video is a must watch. I was incredibly moved by this award-winning animation from PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, entitled #SinkingFeeling, which explores themes of loneliness, isolation and the importance of peer support. I found it a sensitive and powerful piece which will assist in reframing positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. I hope this video will help to start the conversation and allow people - both young and old - to speak more freely about their emotional wellbeing and to find connections. From strategies for managing stress to tips for initiating conversations about suicide, methods to help with coping, and addressing anxiety, PAPYRUS provides a wide array of helpful guidance and resources available for download - take a look 👉 https://lnkd.in/evsw922x #SavingYoungLives #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth

💛 What a video! 💙 That's why educators need to adopt a relational approach with children, to better understand their daily and lived experiences and how these impact on them and their wellbeing. 💜 I despair how in some circles the narrative is being pushed that the key to maintaining a successful school is about discipline and sanctions. What about kindness, positive regard and empathy?

Empowering SENDCOs to Transforming Challenges into Success Stories. #EducationCoaching #Learning #EducationalLeadership #DiversityAndInclusion
The sooner we get help... ...the bigger the difference made. On average 1 in 6 children are said to struggle with mental health for a variety of reasons, but in settings where early help is provided that number decreases rapidly. Just as if you take a pebble out of your shoe before you get a blister you save yourself days of discomfort. Yet it is perception which according to the research which has the biggest impact. Why? Well, when children (or adults) feel heard they are less likely to fixate on the negatives and more likely to ask questions and find solutions, thereby building the resilience they require, all because they they did not think that they couldn't. Essentially they start to help themselves before they reach a place of negative mental health, so the mental health concern never gets worse, never need high level support or impact others around them. So, I 100% believe that we should be the help that we are seeking, and help children to also understand and help themselves in a proactive manner, but to do this we must first resolve any trauma we ourself are holding onto, so that we can listen without prejudice. P.S If you don't know where to start in becoming the adult that the child/children need then please do get in touch. Either via [email protected] or DM here on LinkedIn. #Coaching #EducationLeadership Photo credit: AI generated image of a child with endless possibility before them.
