My Journey to the End of the World... Today marks the 2nd anniversary of completing my journey on the Camino Francés, a trek over 900 kilometers across northern Spain to the "end of the world" at Cape Finisterre. The lighthouse there, at the edge of the European mainland, has long been a symbolic destination for pilgrims. Many Germans have a romantic and somewhat religious view of the Camino, thanks to Hape Kerkeling's famous book about his pilgrimage. His story, adapted into a delightful movie starring David Striesow, captures the spirit of the Camino – a blend of humor, challenge, and profound discovery. Unlike many, I didn’t train for the Camino. My preparation focused on ensuring my backpack and belongings weighed no more than 8kg. The first stage was a baptism by fire: 25 kilometers and an altitude change of 1,350 meters. I was utterly exhausted, but the sense of accomplishment was incredible. The Camino is a metaphor for life and leadership. Every challenge taught me resilience and determination. Whether it was the fatigue, the blisters, or the harsh weather, each obstacle became an opportunity to learn and grow. One memorable moment was reaching O Cebreiro, a village touching the sky with its views and history. Here, I felt a deep connection to something larger than myself. Whether it was God, fate, or the spirit of the Camino, I found peace and purpose. Meeting fellow pilgrims was another highlight. The shared journey fostered instant bonds, underscoring the power of community – lessons that resonate deeply in leadership and mentorship. Reaching Cape Finisterre marked an inner transformation. Standing at the edge of the world, I let my tears roll and needed quite some time before I could start reflecting on my resilience and perseverance getting me here. These qualities continue to inspire my work today. So, did I meet God on the Camino? In a way, yes. I found clarity, strength, and a deeper understanding of my purpose. Create a New Plan: - If going back isn't an option, let's create a new plan or itinerary. It might take longer than expected, but the key is that we're not stuck. We're still moving, and we'll reach our destination, albeit through a different path. Remember, the journey is about more than just the destination. Life is indeed a journey, a continuous uphill ride. Our destinies are the peaks of individual mountains, each with its own unique challenges and rewards. Some may strive for the same summit, yet the paths we take will be as varied as the climbers themselves. One side of the mountain might be a smooth, scenic cruise, while the other a treacherous, near-vertical ascent. However, just as with the easier slopes, it's crucial to identify and navigate towards smoother stretches on our personal journeys to reach our destinations. Here's the key point: While we often describe this journey as an uphill walk, it's more like an uphill ride. If we stop accelerating, we won't just stall – we'll start sliding backward. Even in neutral, momentum carries us down. Life, in the same way, demands constant progress. We need to keep pushing forward, accelerating ourselves towards our personal peaks.
