Did you know that tug of war was once an Olympic sport? It featured in the Summer Olympics from 1900 to 1920. Interestingly, countries could enter multiple teams in the competition, allowing them to sweep the podium. At a time when rugby union is struggling in North America, and despite not having the Eagles qualifying for the RWC23, Major League Rugby is attracting many former rugby icons, such as Matt Giteau, to name but one. Recently, Stade Toulousain, one of Europe's most prestigious clubs, joined forces with the Utah Warriors, striking a major blow on the American Rugby Union (XV) market. However, it is Rugby League (XIII) that is about to conquer the American market. This type of rugby, often described as more spectacular and rougher, is about to set foot in the United States. The economic strategy behind this move is questionable and highly risky... But "high-risk = high-reward". I can't wait to see if Rugby League (XIII) can make it on the American market before Rugby Union (XV) rugby does. EU Medal Surge The Olympics are under way in Paris, and the European Union is off to a splendid start. In the first day it won a total of 11 medals (compared with three for the USA and two for China). This includes three Golds, of which one was a rousing upset of Fiji in Rugby Sevens after a rousing display of EU talent by Antoine Dupont. The EU is the sports powerhouse no one can dismiss. Note: had the UK still been part of the EU, the total tally would have been "lucky thirteen". How do people come up with the idea of adding up all the medals won by the USA, China or the EU countries and deriving success from this? In sport in particular, all countries work independently and not according to American, Chinese or EU guidelines. If you see an EU team here, please don't forget that only 2 starters or 1 team are allowed to compete per competition, i.e. not 30 or 15 as in Paris. Apart from how the selection process within the EU is supposed to work, the medal haul would be significantly lower.
