京都西陣織物 Kyoto Nishijin Textile Artworks in Japan. From Kyoto, the historic city that became Japan's capital in 794 AD, to everyone around the world. Kyoto Nishijin Textiles trace their origins back to the 5th-6th centuries and established their foundation in the 15th century. This means that Kyoto Nishijin Textiles boast over 1500 years of history and were also offerings to the Emperor. While kimonos are world-renowned, today, few Japanese people wear kimonos. As demand decreases, Kyoto Nishijin Textiles face a crisis of survival. Furthermore, the average age of many specialized craftsmen exceeds 70, and we are also facing the issue of successors. To ensure that this venerable tradition does not fade away, we are embarking on a new challenge. This challenge is to create a new value of "Kyoto Nishijin Textiles to be admired as decoration" instead of "Kyoto Nishijin Textiles to be worn beautifully." By decorating and admiring these textiles in spaces where you relax daily, such as your living room, study, or in rooms where you spend much time, such as offices, reception rooms, stores, and facilities, you can enjoy a unique and proud space. Moreover, we have started precisely recreating works by renowned international painters like Van Gogh and Renoir with Kyoto Nishijin Textiles. These works are woven with a delicacy 4 to 9 times greater than typical Nishijin textiles. The technique used is a new technology worthy of a patent. In other words, our works cannot be purchased at other stores. Besides using standard dyed threads, we also use pure gold leaf threads, pure silver leaf threads, and platinum leaf threads, boasting a purity of 999.9% or higher. Our works are woven by skilled craftsmen, taking approximately 70 days to complete over 20 specialized processes. The finished products are rich in artistry, with unchanging luster and vividly recreated color gradients. What an inspiration Fleurs de Villes was! The exhibition was a stunning reminder of the incredible power of creativity. Walking through the displays, I was captivated by the imaginative use of flowers to create something both beautiful and unexpected. Each floral masterpiece told a unique story, capturing the essence of nature in a way that deeply resonated with my own passion for art, design, and creativity. As an artist, I’m always searching for fresh ways to express creativity and infuse colour into the world. Seeing how the floral artists at Fleurs de Villes pushed the boundaries of traditional design was incredibly inspiring. It mirrored how I approach my own work—whether through bold colours or innovative designs, I strive to create art that surprises and delights, much like the floral couture on display. The exhibition wasn’t just a feast for the eyes; it was a powerful reminder of the limitless possibilities that creativity offers. It reaffirmed my belief that art, in any form, has the ability to transform and elevate the everyday. For me, that’s the essence of being an artist—drawing inspiration from the world around me and turning it into something vibrant and memorable. #URBANFABRIC / My conversation with Gallery COLLECTIONAL about showcasing Asian collectible design began when gallery founder Cristiano Baccianti and I reconnected in Milan during last year's Salone del Mobile. Cristiano showed a keen interest in Asian creative scenes and cultures, which made me realise that the term '#AsianDesign' is too convenient to encapsulate the nuances of the vast cultural diversity across Asia. And very often, 'Asian design' evokes preconceived notions or stereotypes, but my work with various Asian cultures reveals a different reality. I am eager to highlight the latest developments in these creative scenes through the works of the younger generation of creatives who have diverse cultural backgrounds yet possess an international perspective. Many have been educated in the West, worked with European or American studios, or are now based outside Asia. These designers operate in contemporary contexts, yet their own culture and outlook as a solid creative foundation radiate from their works. In this first series, the seven designers we worked with, from #China, #Japan, #Singapore and #SouthKorea, had no prior experience in the collectible design field or the gallery environment. This aspect is particularly significant to me because I value the solid foundation they all possess in their respective fields, whether it be industrial design, interior design, or furniture manufacturing. They are experts in materials, manufacturing techniques, and new technologies, and, in addition, they have a strong understanding of craftsmanship and quality. I believe that providing them with this platform to step outside of their comfort zones and offering them an opportunity to express themselves in ways not achievable through mass production and consumer markets will stimulate them to create something refreshing and exciting. All 28 pieces in the series are masterfully designed and engineered, with a unique sensibility and story behind them.
