Let’s talk about security. In the past week, we’ve had two major security incidents at MLB games. On Friday, August 25th, a shooting injured two women at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, IL. The suspect supposedly snuck the firearm into the stadium by hiding it “in the folds of her belly fat.” The second incident happened last night, August 28th. Two fans rushed Ronald Acuna Jr. at Coors Field in Denver, CO. The first fan gave Acuna a hug and wouldn’t let go as security ran after him and attempted to pull him off. A second fan came in behind and knocked Acuna to the ground. Both fans were tackled by the security staff. A third fan went onto the field as well but was stopped. https://lnkd.in/ghHWiZEQ A question needs to be asked: how are we going to prevent these security breaches from happening? Fans deserve to come to a game and feel safe. Questions to ask: Is it a lack of security staff? Everywhere is short-staffed. This was a major result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the sports & entertainment industry has still struggled hiring part-time event staff. In Chicago, was one security guard assigned to watch multiple metal detectors as guests were entering the building? When staff are spread thin, things will get missed. Unfortunately, a weapon was missed this time… In Denver, it took security staff a long time to get to those fans which leads me to believe that they were also spread thin. There’s no way those fans should have gotten all the way to Acuna if Coors was properly staffed. Lack of training? Specifically for the White Sox firearm incident, were the staff properly trained on how to use the metal detectors and how to interact with guests who set off the metal detector? Was the event management staff trained on how to properly setup the metal detectors? If the firearm was truly hidden in their folds of belly fat and she set off the metal detector, a hand wand should have been used. Low pay for event staff? We’ve come a long way in this area. Most teams are probably paying their event staff at least $15/hr now when it used to be in the $12-13 range. That isn’t enough though. If you want your facility to have talented individuals for your event staff, you have to do better with pay. These are part-time jobs so to get top talent, you have to have better pay and benefits. In turn, you won’t be short staffed and you’ll be able to train and retain these talented staff. This goes for all of the Guest Experience and Security staff (and includes Management too). These departments open the doors for your guests, provide security for the guests and talent, and are not paid properly for this. I still see job postings for Managers in these fields that pay $35-50k while other office staff are paid twice as much. I can tell you from my own experiences working in professional sports that if we solve these three questions, it will really help improve security and fan experience. Staff, Training, and Pay. What do you think?
They tried to hug Ronald Acuña Jr. 😳

I’m excited this week to be in South Carolina this week for the NGA Glass Conference: Isle of Palms | Charleston. The conference brings together the industry’s best technical minds (no kidding), and it kicks off in full tomorrow, with meetings of the NGA’s Advocacy, Fabricating and Forming Committees. I’ll also be providing an update on 10 Industry Metrics to Watch. One early spoiler: Global Supply Chain metrics have had a dramatic couple of weeks. Prices on containers have more than doubled in the weeks following the attacks in the Red Sea, which have forced shipments to route around the Cape of Good Hope. Check out https://lnkd.in/gGdMY3WM for more coverage from the conference throughout the week. (Plus more here: https://lnkd.in/ghxMWHUB). And if you're in Isle of Palms, I can't wait to see you! https://lnkd.in/gtpV-TnJ
