A talking point that doctrinaire ideologues are unwilling to engage when it come to superpower roles in the international system, is that rarely if ever has a rules-based order succeeded without a great power of some kind to underwrite it. The alternative sounds somehow more ‘egalitarian’ when it’s less: the legal sovereign equality of states is an astonishingly recent concept, as is the idea of self-determination that accompanies it. Neither of them is ‘obvious’ without active intellectual and vast material investment into them. US retrenchment is increasingly in the US’s best self interest in many respects. Yet, time and again, you see the (sincerely-made) moral and intellectual argument for US engagement, and against US isolationism, expressed as an obligation rather than opportunism. We’ve run the experiment enough times to realise how destabilising sudden superpower retrenchment can be. #Isolationism #ForeignPolicy #RulesBasedOrder
