All the brilliant reasons for taking part are below 👇 👉 The number of under-50s worldwide being diagnosed with cancer has risen by nearly 80% in 30 years but research has shown that 50% of employees are afraid to tell their employers. 👉 ‘With more than 178,000 people diagnosed this year in the UK alone, responsible leadership demands more than just compliance with regulations: it requires empathy, flexibility, and proactive measures’; [Business Leader Magazine; Patricia Cullen, December/January 2024] 👉 Working With Cancer (WWC) is partnering with the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) to conduct a groundbreaking survey aimed at informing employers about how best to support employees who are working with cancer and transitioning back into the workplace after active treatment. 👉 We’re casting a wide net, inviting responsible employers from every corner of the UK, regardless of size, to share their insights, including those that have signed the Working with Cancer Pledge (link to website). The survey specifically targets UK-based professionals with senior HR responsibilities or managerial staff in small enterprises who might also perform HR tasks. 👉 By taking part in this survey anonymously you’ll help many others. The study will illuminate continuing gaps in service provision, and so enable employers to develop services which will make a significant difference to the wellbeing of their employees affected by cancer. Research conducted by Publicis Groupe surveyed 1,000 UK workers with a cancer diagnosis and revealed that 71% were fearful of telling their employer and the people they work with about their diagnosis. Almost half of those surveyed (49%) said this was because they were concerned about the financial impact and consequences if they needed to take sick leave or stop working. Among all UK workers with cancer, 46% revealed they continued working following their diagnosis due to financial pressures, despite poor health. 🌟 Empowerment Alert! 🌟 Today, I want to invite you to reflect on the number of women you've interacted with. Did you know that out of every 7 women, at least 1 is at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer? 🎗️ Now, let's imagine the upcoming festive season, like Christmas or Mother's Day, where families and loved ones come together. It's important to realise that breast health should be on everyone's radar, regardless of gender identity. The risk is real. Here's a thought that might give you goosebumps: among all the people you'll be celebrating with, there's a chance that few or none of them are prioritising routine health checks and breast screenings. But here's the truth we need to embrace: early detection can be a game-changer, a matter of life and death. The good news is that early detection significantly improves survival rates. In fact, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer has soared to an incredible 95%! 🌟 So, let's empower the women in our lives, including ourselves, to take just 30 minutes out of our day for a screening. And guess what? The screening itself takes only 10 minutes. It's a simple, yet powerful step towards ensuring our well-being. Best yet - it is free for women over 40. And remember, men are not exempt from the risk - 1 in 542 men are also at risk of breast cancer. Now, let's talk about workplaces and how we can support the health and well-being of employees. Creating a workplace culture that prioritises health is crucial. Employers can play a significant role in promoting breast cancer awareness and encouraging regular screenings among their employees. By providing information, resources, and even organising on-site screenings, employers can contribute to early detection and potentially save lives. Let's make our workplaces safe spaces for open conversations about health and well-being. Let's spread the word, raise awareness, and support each other in this journey towards a healthier future.
