"PBMs hold substantial influence over independent pharmacies by imposing unfair, arbitrary, and harmful contractual terms that can impact independent pharmacies’ ability to stay in business and serve their communities." It's so difficult to explain what a PBM is and what purpose they serve (or were originally designed to serve) to those outside of the pharmacy world. But without drastic, immediate change I fear for the practice of pharmacy. There are already so many pharmacy deserts in our country... so many patients are unable to access a pharmacist they need to help manage their medications. I keep hearing people say "they can just get mail order". This may work for some, but please keep in mind those patients needing extra management and care of a pharmacist... Someone to package their medications and ensure they understand what they're taking... someone to help them read their continuous blood glucose reports or check their blood pressure when they don't have access to a machine and can't get in to their physician. How many people get their vaccines at their local pharmacy? If pharmacies continue to close, patients will continue to suffer. It's past time for PBM reform.

U.S. pharmacy groups finally see results from their 15-year effort to raise awareness of the fact that the top three U.S. pharmacy benefits managers (who also own pharmacy chains, insurers and healthcare provider organizations) have deliberately inflated drug prices, limited patients’ access to medications and directly caused the closure of tens of thousands of community pharmacies. The IQVIA Use of Medicines in the US report is full of great pharmacy benefits information! Let's start with days of therapy 📅 💊 Total prescription medication use increase in 2023 by 3% to 210 billion days of therapy. Up 15% in the last 5 years! 💊 83% of these days were in the retail space (most likely pharmacy benefits) 💊 51% of all prescriptions were dispensed in 90-day amounts, up from 43% in 2019. This breaks down to 89% at mail order pharmacies and 51% at retail pharmacies 💊 Use of mail order pharmacies remained flat after growing an average of 2.7% annually in the previous 4 years. #Pharmacists #Pharmacybenefits #Medicationuse #PBM
