Vital reading for all of us investing in solutions. Water scarcity impacts economic growth in all countries rich and poor but the impact on poorer nations is the most pronounced, emphasising wealth inequality as an important contributor to economic decline. The report tells us that ‘Over the last two decades, at least 1.65 billion people globally have been adversely affected by floods—an increase of 24 percent compared to previous decades (Browder et al. 2021; Tellman et al. 2021; CRED and UNDRR 2020). By 2030, projections suggest an additional 180 million people will be directly affected by flooding (Tellman et al. 2021.)’ Investment in water storage infrastructure is the key to sustainable development that can resolve flood risk, supply issues and provide an important fuel for electricity generation through hydropower.

What the Future Has in Store: A New Paradigm for Water Storage calls for developing and driving multi-sectoral solutions to the water storage gap, taking approaches that integrate needs and opportunities across the whole system, including natural, built, and hybrid storage, to support many instead of few, for generations to come. https://bityl.co/KxoI

#Sponge #bioregions and #cities are needed to REVERSE the current #water management approach of channeling #rainwater and #flooding filled with #sewage, #plastics, and waste into #rivers and #oceans as fast as possible. Rather, we need to capture and save all water to refill #aquifers, #lakes, #ponds, #reservoirs and #watersheds. That's a lot of re-engineering, but it will create many #green #jobs in #fishing, #aquaculture, and #tourism.
