Just watched Uber’s “Airport Dads” commercial. All I have to say is: But who scheduled the trip, booked the best plane ticket deals, booked the lodging, organized all of the kids things (clothes, shoes, books, toys, snacks, plane activities, beloved stuffies, etc.), fed the kids, emotionally supported the kids during meltdowns, made sure the pet had a sitter, cleaned out the fridge before leaving, made sure all the lights were off, and locked the doors? But shout out to all the dads for “getting to the airport 5 hours early.” Also, let’s be real. Who actually scheduled the Uber? Why not make the Mom the hero of this narrative? Why not give moms the opportunity to take one more thing off her list by reserving an Uber up to 90 days in advance? Why not create an airport lounge for the mom who can finally relax once everyone's through TSA? So many questions!

In the week commencing Monday, 15th April 2024 I was delivering takeaways for Uber Eats for the 49th consecutive week. My driving time was 3 hours and I finished 13 trips. I completed my 2,250th trip on Saturday. It was a very pleasing milestone to hit. My highest earnings were on Saturday followed by Thursday, Wednesday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Friday in descending order. I finished 1 job each day on Monday to Friday, then 6 and 2 jobs on Saturday and Sunday respectively. My biggest transaction was on Saturday from near Woodgate to Welford Road with a driving time of 37 minutes and 23 seconds and a distance of 4 miles. My 2nd highest transaction was also on Saturday from near Welford Road to near Narborough Road with a driving time of 16 minutes and 44 seconds and a distance of 2.2 miles. I earned 37 Uber Eats Pro points. In addition I was teaching in college on Monday to Friday. I taught 4 lessons on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 3 lessons on Tuesday and 5 on Friday. One of the topics I taught was justifying planning decisions made when using social media in business. #teaching #work #delivery #UberEats

So, we looked at the structure of delivery slots of British e-grocers during Covid-19 and lockdown. You and your family are forced to stay at home 24 hours a day, and you are relatively indifferent to when the delivery truck arrives. You would happily agree to a long delivery slot, say 12:00 - 22:00 or even 09:00 - 22:00. And if delivery in a long time slot were cheaper (the longer, the cheaper) then you would be even happier. But the British e-grocers stubbornly did not, and now do not, give you the opportunity to choose your own long delivery slot, they impose on you, force you to take only short 1-hour slots, which you do not always need. And during the lockdown period you were forced to buy very high and completely unnecessary punctuality of delivery.

Let's talk sharp business practice... Is there any place for it? I received a parking fine the other day from Euro Car Parks in Cheltenham, and I am pretty cross about it. I went over the allotted time by seven minutes (eleven if you go by CCTV but since the ticket gives my contracted return time I stick to the seven). I have appealed, stating that £60 was not reasonable for seven minutes. They declined my appeal. I would appeal again but then it may cost me £100. The thing is, they are not wrong. I went over my time. Moreover, the £60 fine covers what I would pay over 10 stays at their car park, and I don't have that much history with them. They have probably got more cash out of me today than they would have otherwise over the next 18 months. Of course, I now hate them and their ticket happy ways. I shall warn my colleagues, I will not include them on parking lists when organising events, and I am writing this. Whatever I can sensibly do to encourage a greater than £60 loss of income I shall do; though I don't over-estimate my influence. Have Euro Car Parks done the right thing commercially with their sharp business practice? There are other business models. By contrast, I once forgot to pay for a whole day of parking at NCP. They sent me a note saying they noticed and please can I ensure I remember in the future. Suddenly I am writing glowing words about NCP, which I really never thought would happen after numerous customer service encounters in the paper ticket days (tiresome but all eventually resolved in my favour). Now, when my usual NCP lot is full I shall seek out the other NCP car park, even though it is more expensive and less convenient to exit than the ticket happy pot-hole ridden Euro Car Parks one. #ParkingFine #SharpBusinessPractice #AnythingForABuck #EuroCarParksBad #NCPGoodWhoKnew
