Here is a teaser shot of one my personal Cartier Santos Carree in 18k yellow gold with a factory Saphire and diamond setting with a laquered blue dial from the 1980s. This specific piece was a custom piece made by Cartier’s 5th avenue boutique in NYC. I bought this at a time where many dealers thought I was overpaying or was buying the wrong watch. Those same dealers are now offering more than double of what I paid! The market has changed in the past few years. Gold watches are back, especially in vintage. Factory diamond settings from brands such as Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet are skyrocketing in value, and for good reason. Everyone wants the ORIGINAL. Watches and Wonders 2024 was hosted in Geneva, Switzerland. The most amazing thing that I learnt was the amazing engineering, enginuity, design and boldness of the Watch Making Industry. There are many luxury brands and entry level brands that have brought our interesting designs and watches. Some of them are a staggering eye watering price. I’ve realised I prefer a “traditional” design and a daintier watch, considering my ridiculously small wrists. For those that are interested in watches, what are your most favorite brands and why? The Patek Philippe reference 3633 in 18k white gold with its original onyx dial is a great example of an elusive, yet under the radar watch. From the 70s-80s, brands such as Patek, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, and of course Piaget have been experimenting with alternative stone materials, gold, and different designs. This era for watchmaking was arguably one of the biggest cultural changes and watch taste for the consumer public. Of course, dress watches and complications were still being produced and worn, but this “new, edgy” style of watches, even coming from Patek, a historically stiff brand when it comes to change, hasn’t been done before. It’s refreshing to see an infinite palette of bracelet and dial designs from big brands. After the 90s-2000s, alot of integrated allure stopped as it wasn’t in style much any more. We’re seeing collectors and the mainstream watch market rediscover the integrated watch design again. We’re looking at the beloved Piaget Polo perpetual calendar from the 1980s. Piaget took pride in being one of the most “expensive” watches one can buy in the 1980s in their retail stores. Of course, there were other watches from brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe that were more expensive, but they were more obscure, lesser known pieces, often times off catalogue for the real collectors/ connoisseurs. The Polo was meant to be the more mainstream “expensive” watch, like how the Rolex Daydate is perceived today. (it’s funny to see a just a brick of gold in the 80s was all it took to be one of the most expensive watches to buy but go figure, that was the culture back then) The hype for the Piaget Polo 79 has calmed down, but we are always looking to source clean examples of their vintage iterations. Here’s an example of one of our offerings: a unique Vacheron Constantin in 18k white gold with a truly woven textured bracelet. Another important detail is it’s detail. What seems just like an ordinary black dial is actually a stone called onyx. Stone dials in Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, and of course Vacheron Constantin have grown in popularity for their distinct look and beautiful designs. Of course, it’s quite different then what collectors and the mainstream watch market are used to wearing. The market has been used to the blue dial sports watch craze. Gold is making its comeback and more importantly, dial details. Beautiful, rare dials and unique textures throughout the bracelet from these historically significant brands are the NEXT thing in watches. It will be interesting to see if brands such as Patek or Piaget reintroduce their 70s-80s gold examples into their current production line up. There’s a huge opportunity for these brands to take advantage of the new all gold trend with a fresh, modern take. We’re looking forward to what’s to come, but for now, collectors are trying to scoop up any good examples they can find. There are grandpa watches and then there is Breguet with this delicate chain bracelet from the 80s. Breguet has always been under the radar or worn by Russian oligarchs, but there’s no in between! In all seriousness, the brand deserves recognition as being one of the oldest watchmakers in the world. There will be a time in the watch industry that Breguet will increase in price, sooner rather than later assuming the same rate with the demand that we are seeing in both Cartier and Piaget. If you asked people before COVID what brands they think would perform well, Breguet, Cartier, and Piaget would be on the bottom of the list for many in the watch industry. These brands or conglomerates that own these brands strategically pivoted post-Covid with their marketing/ production. Of course, it also helps that Instagram and Tik Tok played a huge rule in demand and general exposure for watch brands, arguably for the better. Watch collectors and dealers are always speculating on what that “next” brand will be and Breguet will soon be that “next”, sooner rather than later.
