It’s Black History Month! 🗓️ I’ve done my share of keynotes, events, and other engagements to bring awareness to the month and, while people leave intrigued, they also leave needing and wanting more. So, in addition to today's coaching tips Tuesday, throughout the month of February, I’ll be offering a few resources. 🎧 BOTH Leading Below the Surface podcast episodes will feature Black leaders — in the first episode, we will explore what it's like to become the first Black LGBTQ+ mayor in a state where it has been unheard of. What is it like to be a below the surface leader in such environments? 🏳️🌈 The second episode will feature a conversation about reparations. In that episode, we will explore what reparations are, the misconceptions surrounding them, how all of us can think about them, and how you can have a reparations mindset without waiting for others to come along. 💡 And, as with every year, this month's newsletter will focus on the state of Black people in the workplace. So now let's get back to coaching tips Tuesday. 👂🏾 ----- Today's tip focuses on P2B Below the Surface listening, a concept I write about in Leading Below the Surface. P2B listening is listening through observing, seeing who belongs and who does not, who has power, who feels shut down, and who may seem out of place – you know those people nobody is engaging with. It's the folks who tend to look different from everyone else. And, speaking of it, just because you have a few Black people in the room, it doesn’t mean you are engaging us in meaningful ways. Charlie Condou is an actor, writer and LGBT+ activist, probably best known for his roles as Nino in Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Marcus Dent in Coronation Street, a character he played for 5 years. His weekly column in The Guardian “The Three of Us’’ details his experience of co-parenting with his husband Cameron and their friend Catherine. ‘As Queer people, we are coming from a place where the world is not geared towards us….’ ‘If we can’t connect with ourselves on a deeper level, how can we ever expect to connect properly with anyone else…’ Connecting with yourself isn’t easy! Are you able to do so or does the thought itself totally scare you? During this episode, Charlie opens up about what it feels like being an out and proud gay man, and gay Dad in the public eye. Charlie discusses what it feels like to be lonely even when within a group of people, how we need to connect to all parts of ourselves and in turn connect with others. This episode includes us talking about community vs family of choice as Charlie takes us on a journey through his own experiences of his younger self to what it has been like for him today becoming a gay Dad, the obstacles he has faced and how society views his family unit. ‘How can society tell anyone how they feel, who they are and how they should identify?’ - which allows both Silva and Ben and in turn our listeners to ask ourselves if we are afraid to be ourselves and how easy is it for us to be wholly vulnerable with others?
