☀️ What will you read this summer? Here are my 2 tips for you. 📙 The first is a book I am reading these days. “THE CONSCIOUS MIND - In search of a fundamental theory” by David Chalmers Chalmers unveils a major new theory of consciousness, one that rejects the prevailing reductionist trend of science and focuses on consciousness’ irriducibility - similar to such physical properties as time, mass, and space. The Economist described it as a “startling book”. ______ 📕 The second is my latest Amazon bestseller, 5th of a series of books that I authored about economics, financial markets, and technology. “BANKS AND FINTECH ON PLATFORM ECONOMIES - Contextual and Conscious Banking”. I developed a Banking Reinvention Quadrant (BRQ) to explain how to digitalize value in the current shift from “output economies” (linear distribution of products) to “outcome economies” (experiences and advisory relationships). Core to this book is the novel theory of “Financial Market Transparency” that allows identifying the real value of banking intermediation in the (neuro)biological micro-foundations of financial relationships. Only if we identify value we can digitalize it. That’s why we need of a positive theory that anchors investments in technology and springs new platform-oriented business models via “Contextual Banking” (embedded finance) and “Conscious Banking” (transparent advisory networks). This strategic approach generates business value for bankers, and substantial value for clients by increasing their consciousness about any financial decisions facing the irreversibility of personal and business times. And - by network effects like regulatory-driven consequentialist ethics - it increases the consciousness of the financial system to become “antifragile” in dealing with the fundamental uncertainty of financial markets. It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language.
