I never thought I would have to say this, but Dame Judi Dench is wrong. Let's first set the record straight about WHO & WHAT trigger warnings are for: ✅ People (audience members) with PTSD and other anxiety disorders ✅ People who may experience severe physiological reactions to content related to their trauma That's it. That's the list. They are NOT for: ⛔️ People who get easily offended ⛔️ People who don't want to be surprised, disturbed, shocked, or upset ⛔️ People who are "sensitive" Ok! Now that we're all on the same page. Let's talk about trigger warnings in the theatre. Unfortunately, many theaters present trigger warnings front-and-center in the program or they announce them during the curtain speech along with strobe & fog warnings. Now, industry legends like Dench, Matt Smith, and Ralph Fiennes have weighed in saying these act as spoilers, ruining the impact of the show. Dame Judi Dench even went so far as to say, "if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theatre." Instead of having a simple, productive conversation about how to present trigger warnings in a manner accessible (yet strategically hidden), we're stuck debating whether trauma victims should just stop watching theatre. 🤦♀️ Here's a personal example of what being triggered looks like: While attending a regularly scheduled company all-hands, a guest speaker began showing graphic photographs and reading extremely detailed accounts from other trauma victims. As he read, I began to feel nauseous. My body temperature spiked. My palms covered in sweat. I began shaking and sobbing. Within a few minutes I went from perfectly fine, to throwing up. It ended my day. I was forced to leave the meeting, cancel all my appointments, delay even some projects because I physically couldn't work. If, however, the calendar invite or intro email had included a trigger warning, I would have prepared a cope-ahead plan or even not attended the meeting. And I would have been FINE. In Dench's view however, I guess I should just not go to any more all-hands meetings...? Or watch movies? Or go to the theatre? Nah. Instead, how about we welcome those with PTSD. ➤ Put a QR code on the program for people to look up trigger warnings ➤ Provide a link to trigger warnings on the ticketing site, so people with trauma can check before purchase ➤ Wanna get really simple? Tell the House Manager what the trigger warnings are & let patrons know that the HM can provide that information if needed Dame Judi Dench is a gem. We should protect her at all costs. We should also explain trauma to her, so she can get her foot out of her mouth. Lastly, shout out to Dropout, Sam Reich, and Brennan Lee Mulligan for doing trigger warnings exceptionally well. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #ptsd #triggerwarning #mentalhealth

This documentary film exposes the dark side of pharmaceuticals in the treatment of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, PTSD, and a host of other symptoms that one would normally associate with trauma, grief, stress, or burnout. One of the most dangerous narratives in our society is this notion that if one is not happy or upbeat, there is something automatically wrong with them. And as an individual who spent most of their life experiencing mild depression and anxiety and even more recently, as a survivor of Narcissistic Abuse, Scapegoating, Organized Stalking & Harassment, I’ve only become more and more convinced that our society itself is what is truly toxic and that is what is making us sick. Our society fails to understand that healing from trauma or grief or PTSD is a process just like everything and unfortunately, people can be profoundly changed once impacted by certain events or experiences. What is most disturbingly clear as highlighted in this documentary film is the number of people who have been harmed through misdiagnosis or through the prescribing of one or more medications that produced side effects that lowered quality of life or worsened symptoms and behaviors or increased depression or suicidal ideations.

The pain might come later from mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI).... his daughter doesn't know, such brain injuries cannot be seen with the naked eye . Wondering what Kevin O'Leary would say 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gsMZtXhz Fast, reliable solution should include brain scans and precise therapy. EEG scans, at a fraction of the cost of SPECT or MRI, are highly reliable. The brain maps can be used to provide precise therapy to target the brain region that is dysfunctional . See an example, brain dysfunction in red colour before therapy. After precise therapy (TMS, TPS) that targets the location of brain dysfunction likely less or no brain dysfunction (no "holes" in SPECT scans) and less symptoms! https://lnkd.in/gTrQNRJ #mentalhealth #anxiety #suicide #traumaticbraininjury #mtbi #addiction #psychiatry #ptsd #tmstherapy #TMS #health #tmstherapy #brainhealth #suicideprevention #addiction #addictionrecovery #AddBrain_Inc #addiction #sleep #insomnia #insomniaproblems #insomnie #insomnio #recoveroutloud #overdoseawareness #hope #substanceusedisorder #recovery #treatment #trauma #alzheimers #alzheimersawareness #community #support #cognition #technology #mentalillness #suicideawareness #suicidio #depression #anxiety #ADHD #addiction #suicideprevention #psychiatry #tmstherapy #TMS #health #tmstherapy #military #brainhealth #AddBrain_Inc #addiction #recoveroutloud #overdoseawareness #hope #substanceusedisorder #recovery #narcansaveslives #youareworthit #youarenotalone #youcandoit #youareloved #youmatter #treatment #trauma #anxiety #community #support #love #motivation #events #technology #money #mentalhealthawareness #politics #political #therapy #psychiatrists #suffering #highrisk #provide #wecan #pharma #novonordisk #Celexa #allergan #AstraZeneca, #elililly #GlaxoSmithKline #Lundbeck #johnsonandjohnson #Pfizer #merck #strategicpartnerships #iplicensing

#WeekendMovieNight I had the opportunity to watch "The Whale," a 2022 movie directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Brendan Fraser. The film revolves around the life of a morbidly obese man. Overall, I found the movie to be a powerful and emotional portrayal of the struggles that individuals with obesity face on a daily basis. Fraser delivers a stunning performance as Charlie, bringing depth and nuance to a character who is often dismissed or marginalized by society. The film explores Charlie's physical and emotional pain, as well as his isolation and loneliness. It highlights the ways in which obesity can affect a person's mental health and relationships with others. At the same time, it also shows Charlie's resilience and determination to live life on his own terms. One of the things I appreciated about the movie was its honest depiction of obesity. It didn't shy away from the physical realities of Charlie's condition, but it also didn't reduce him to a one-dimensional caricature. Instead, it allowed us to see him as a complex human being with hopes, dreams, and fears. Overall, I would highly recommend "The Whale" to anyone interested in a powerful and honest portrayal of obesity and its impact on individuals and society. It's a challenging and thought-provoking film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. #mentalhealth #society #obesity #obesityawareness https://lnkd.in/gQtAXDnc

Behavioral Health Link recently shared this documentary recently, and I wanted to take a moment to highlight it as well. While we talk a lot about how prevalent suicide is in our society, I think it's equally important to highlight the stories that demonstrate "triumph over trauma." These stories remind us that there is hope on the other side—light in the darkness. However, many just need help finding it. #SuicidePrevention #BehavioralHealth #MentalHealthCrisis

Further in my SAPP work, I have used the Oscar winning movie, "The Joker", a great example for the intersectionality of social exclusion (ostracism) due to mental health and socio-economical status. In the first scene (below in this video), we see that Arthur has been lacking social support and recognition throughout his life. In many communities, we may be taught that one's society is optimal and it allows for people rely on their peers and family, and government for support, but as seen in the first scene, this isn't always the case. Not for everyone. After his therapist breaks down the unfortunate news, Artur feels betrayed by society once again. Stigma prevents us from learning from those who have experienced betrayal from society, and if Arthur does not keep up with his therapy and medication, his symptoms will re-emerge and might further alienate him from society. Which might be why the script includes this question (in the video) rather than others. In the second scene (you may copy and paste the link to your browser to see this one: https://lnkd.in/gHc39pNU ), we see Arthur, now the Joker, starting to become more comfortable in his own skin, but he is betrayed by society yet again. He is invited to give an interview on TV, but instead he is mocked and laughed at. As a result, he snaps again. He states that he sees his despair from society as an excuse for his behavior Before I finish, I want to be clear that I am not trying to excuse the horrible actions that the Joker commits in this movie. Instead I hope that this post can allow us to take a minute or two to think about how the impacts of social stigma can exacerbate. #thejoker #socialexclusion #psychologicalconcepts https://lnkd.in/grP8aSJK

Hello 60 MINUTES - I'd love to talk with you about the 4/7 show on AI, Woebot Health and mental health. Here's why: I'm writing as a practicing psychologist and Chair of Psychotherapy Action Network (PsiAN), a nonprofit that advocates for access to quality therapy. PsiAN has about 6,000 individual members, many of whom are practicing clinicians, and 90 organizational members. I was disappointed to see that your 4/7/24 program featured Woebot in such a glowing light. Not only is that product based on one type of therapy (CBT) that has been shown to be 50% less effective than initially believed, Woebot in particular has been shown to be less effective than a parody computer program called Eliza. In addition, the original research we have conducted in a nationwide study on what people want from therapy shows they want to get to the root of themselves and their issues. Symptom relief is not nearly enough, and scripted educational information barely scratches the surface. If we really want to increase access to quality care, then we should be talking about the insurance industry. They routinely violate the law of parity and pay therapists well-under-market reimbursement rates, making it exceedingly hard for therapists to do business with them. They also make billions just for administering plans, as opposed to paying for treatment (see NYT story 4/7/24: https://lnkd.in/gmqBHrwE). While I hope we can find ways to harness and utilize technology to assist therapists and help reduce suffering, this product seems unlikely to do that. We have to really get clear on how therapy works, what therapy is, and what role can technology reliably play. I’m happy to talk with you further about our original research and the evidence base underlying effective therapy. #psychotherapy #mentalhealth #therapists
On April 7th, CBS aired a segment on 60 MINUTES that featured AI-based “therapy support tool” Woebot Health from a disturbingly one-sided perspective. There was hardly any mention of the valid concerns from dissenters about the use of bots in mental health treatment, such as their lack of efficacy, potential for harm and violations of privacy, and dismissal of the most healing aspect of therapy - the relationship! Join us in letting CBS know that their coverage of this increasingly relevant topic fell short of painting the full picture, and help us promote therapies of depth, relationship, and insight. To leave feedback on the CBS site: 1. Go to https://lnkd.in/g-ZBWv_M 2. Choose a category. "Specials" 3. Select a program. "60 Minutes" - toward the bottom of the list 4. Tell them what you think! (copy paste not allowed, 2000 character max, no links). You can recommend Dr. Linda Michaels, PsiAN chair, to interview for a follow-up to this episode as someone who can provide sound evidence for what constitutes effective therapy. #mentalhealthmatters #psychotherapy #psychology
