I never wanted to learn to drive, but I'm glad I did. It's taught me to think logically, make quick decisions and solve problems. 🚗 This time 13 years ago, I was embroiled in a debate with my dad about whether I'd learn to drive or not. He told me I had no choice and that my first lesson was Monday after college 🤣. I'm actually quite grateful to my 17 year old self for learning too. Living where I live now, I couldn't be without a car. It's no secret that being able to drive opens up your social and employment mobility too. The only time I was ever without a car was when I worked in America for 3 months, and I had to rely on the other workers... A LOT. It's not just the ability to drive though. It's the confidence that comes with it. Living rural gets you used to a different kind of traffic, one I much prefer to busy motorways or A roads. From winding roads to tight country lanes, I can confidently reverse down a track to let a tractor or horsebox pass. There's normally no hurry either. However, there is a skill to driving on roads where potholes are rarely filled and hedges are overgrown. If you're a good driver, you're a logical thinker, problem solver and quick to react. You plan ahead, know alternative routes and where to break along the way. If you're a bad driver, well... let's leave that there 😂 . #softskills

"Anybody who pulls his erudition or education on you hasn’t any." - Ernest Hemingway Hemingway is probably speaking about Mount Stupid in education. I distinctly remember going through "Dunning-Kruger" when I learnt driving. Of course, I could relate only after Mount Stupid had passed. In my first drives without driving trainer (i.e with a license), my speeds went high pretty early. Subsequently, analysis of the little incidents / near misses progressively told me about the risks I was taking, the checks I was missing..and speeds kept going down. A senior colleague, who was my pool partner at the time and already had 10+ years of driving experience, predicted this nicely while replying to my question: "Why do you drive this cautiously when you have better skills?" Looking back, I can only thank the good luck that the major risks and misfortune did not arrive hand in hand during those first few months, when I was not fully ready to handle them. At Mount Stupid, we are like that 2 year old child who does not have fear of walking on the parapet of a high rise. It was not courage, because courage applies when you are fully aware of what you stand to lose and yet choose it. It was..stupidity, as the curve says it. I hope this share helps new drivers and bike riders to correct their driving outlook early enough. To end with the original quote: I certainly agree with Hemingway. 🚗 Embracing the Journey of Learning to Drive 🚦 Recently, I embarked on a new adventure at a driving school to learn how to drive. Excitement and nervousness filled me as I faced my very first driving experience. The school provided limited classes, emphasizing the need for self-practice to excel. Seeking extra practice, I approached a colleague who agreed to let me practice with his car. Initially, things went smoothly as we practiced in empty parking lots. However, during one session, I unintentionally hit his car against the curb, not once, but twice. I felt terrible and doubted my ability to become a competent driver. Shared my concerns with my driving school instructor that I recounted the mishap with my colleague. Rather than focusing on my mistakes, he encouraged me to believe in myself and stay confident. He patiently guided me, pointing out -where i was doing wrong, -what i was doing good, -what was better than before. With each practice session under his guidance, I noticed myself improving day by day. I spent 5 years working towards getting my driver's licence 😬🚗 But it taught me a thing or two about resilience. Buckle up, it's a wild ride... 👇 🛑 2018: Spent 6 months learning to drive before I was accepted into uni, where I couldn't afford to continue lessons 🛑 2019: Similar story... 🛑 2020: Lockdown came and went, and just as I was starting up lessons in October of that year (with a not-so-great instructor) lockdown 2.0 put a stop to that too 🥴 🛑 2021: Lingering pandemic aftereffects + overwhelming demand for driving instructors = another year without lessons 🛑 2022: I was finally able to have continuous lessons, which I persevered through (even after being in a car accident that completely knocked my confidence...) 🟢 And 2023: After hours travelling back and forth on the train for lessons, practicing with my partner and huge learning curves... I passed my driving test! 🎉 There were so many times where I thought about completely giving up, saving my money and accepting that this just wouldn't happen for me. But I kept going, reminding myself that the end result would all be worth it. (Which it was!)
