So proud of these young women I had the honor of teaching this semester! They created campaigns for Carrie’s Closet, a non-profit organization near and dear to my heart. In honor of our beloved friend and fashionista, Carrie Hamstra, Carrie’s Closet provides boutique-style pop-up shopping experiences for women who are unhoused or experiencing crisis. Loved their insight-inspired campaign concepts: —Insight: Women volunteer and donate so others perceive them as compassionate. Campaign: Be a Compassionista —Insight: Regardless of your economic situation, belonging is essential to survival. Campaign: Find Your Fit —Insight: People donate clothes to absolve themselves for wasteful shopping habits. Campaign: Closet Karma

As we continue our work as an organization in the present, it is always good to reflect on the past and beginnings of The Woman's Exchange. On May 20th, 1883, The Missouri Republican carried an article about the founding ladies of The Woman's Exchange which noted: "Starting out upon the principle that there could be no greater charity than helping those who try to help themselves, the ladies are bound to succeed if the earnestness of intent and never failing attention to details can guarantee success." Although this newspaper publication ceased operations in 1919, the principle of The Woman's Exchange has never changed nor has the devotion to women in our community. Today, our organization continues to utilize sales from our Tearoom & store to support and empower others to lead healthy and productive lives. We work with a variety of individuals including divorced or widowed women, women who require additional income, women who are unable to maintain regular work due to household needs, and early-stage entrepreneurs developing and launching their businesses. #WomansExchange #Woexstl #NewspaperArticle #PastQuotes #Reflection #Nonprofit

Today is the day of Giving...there are more than 1.1 million Black Women and Girls in CA. Its the 5th largest population in the nation. More than 67% Black Women are single mothers, 80% are primary bread winners and a quarter live in poverty. Compared to our female counterparts, we have the highest unemployment rate, the highest high school drop out rate, largest number of unhoused, and are more likely to work two jobs to make ends meet as well as have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates, highest percentage of chronic diseases. Yet, we are still standing...making things happen. Join the California Black Women's Collective Empowerment Institute's vision to improve the lives of CA Black Women and Girls by supporting our work. A message from CEO & President, Kristin S. Shrimplin: Today, MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving announced Women Helping Women as one of the #YieldGivingOpenCall’s awardees working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. WHW was awarded $2 million! In March 2023, Yield Giving launched an Open Call for community-led & focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to empower individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being. The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. In the Fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for their experience relevant to this cause, and underwent a final round of due diligence. In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount! Because we were ranked so highly across the nation, WHW received double the amount of funding we thought was possible! To be seen and uplifted by community peer organizations across the nation is a gift. To receive the largest donation in our 51-year history is a gift. To have that donation come from a female philanthropist is a gift. The honor is humbly ours to keep showing up & to keep activating for our vision of a world where all people are safe, liberated and thriving. They tend to give more frequently and are more likely to make long-term charitable commitments. They also frequently include their children in philanthropic decision making, creating a sustainable pipeline of support.
