I was doing humanitarian work in Ethiopia and we were working in conflict zones in villages to help these villages help themselves. We were there to ask, you know, what are your priorities? How can we support and and where can we help you help yourself? One of my friends who had never been to the region said, what's your #1 priority? And they said it's water. What's your #2 priority? What's your #3 priority? And when my friend asked for the number two priority in the number three priority, the village leaders laughed. Which needed no translation, even though everything else needed translation. And they said our number two priority is water. Our #3 priority is water. It doesn't matter if you build us a school, if we don't have access to clean water and we don't have the ability to get the water where we need it, no one's going to be in those classes and no teachers are going to come. It doesn't matter if you donate us books, it doesn't matter if you teach us about hygiene or agriculture if we can't get this thing done 1st, and I was. So struck by the clarity of priorities that if this one thing isn't done. All the other things are borderline fruitless, and if it does get done, all the other things will be more successful. And I had this out of body experience as a leader and I thought, wow, they're clarity around. What's most important is so clear because the penalty for getting it wrong is severe. But for us, it's easy to be distracted. And so I thought, what is our water? What is the one thing that, if we do it right now, makes everything else better as a result?

Having met Bob Chapman virtually while Ivey Business School at Western University conducting a case study of Truly Human Leadership, I can tell you his methods and philosophy and supported by his behaviour. Be wary of those that cloak themselves in the same words and intentions but NOT the same behaviours! Red flags: 1. “We are Family” (I have a family, this tells me your company intends to replace them) 2. “We step up to support eachother” (There is way too much work and your company isn’t resourced properly and relies on free additional labour form other employees) 3. “We have a great corporate culture” (If the first two are true and you back this up by showcasing corporate events outside work hours…. I’m not buying it) 4. “We don’t believe in company phones, trust me, no one will call you after hours”…….. ……Just Run! Leaders! Treat your employees LIKE FAMILY!!!! But do not ask the same from them, they have a family. Support them just like Bob does and don’t make it about you, that’s when you will connect deeply and make an impact!
