Nurturing Life and Community: A Journey Beyond Healthcare in North Idaho Leading a Federally Qualified Health Center in North Idaho, I’m reminded daily of the immense privilege and duty of our mission: We Exist to Improve Life. This is not merely a slogan; it's a compass guiding every decision and action we undertake. In healthcare's complex world, it's easy to get lost in disease management and treatment. Yet, at Heritage Health, we focus on prevention, understanding each individual’s unique life, environment, and daily choices. We’re not just treating diseases; we’re treating the whole person, integrating medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services. I lead a team of passionate professionals who are more than employees; they’re pioneers redefining healthcare from a disease-centric to a life-centric model. This shift is monumental and challenging, but profoundly rewarding. Healthcare's true beauty lies in relationships—the foundation of effective care. This week is National Advanced Care Planning Week. Advance care planning involves planning for your future health care. It enables you to make some decisions now about the health care you would or would not like to receive if you were to become seriously ill and unable to communicate your preferences or make treatment decisions. Advance care planning gives you the opportunity to think about, discuss and record your preferences for the type of care you would like to receive and the outcomes you would consider acceptable. Advance care planning helps to ensure your loved ones and health providers know what matters most to you and respect your treatment preferences. This is an important topic for us all to consider and especially if you have elderly relatives who have not had these conversations yet. The move into specialty care from Included Health puts it in rare company: >It has deep roots in specialty care from Grand Rounds Health's virtual second opinions >It offers integrated virtual care through Doctor On Demand's on-demand visits for both physical and mental health >It's one of the largest care navigators in the country by member count >It's grown a nationwide network of 4,000+ specialists and collaborates with over 40 health systems (not to mention a seriously well-rounded partner ecosystem) Few orgs have the resources / scale / track record to try and coordinate the same breadth of offerings (e.g. Teladoc, Transcarent), and even fewer are diving into the deep end of specialty care. Most of us have a love/hate relationship with doctors’ offices and hospitals. It can take a lot of time and energy to get in the door but, once we’re actually sitting with our doctor, we suddenly don't have any recollection of what it took to get there. So, patients continue to pick up the phone and call their doctors, practices continue to be overwhelmed with phone calls, budgets aren’t there to hire more people to answer the phones and, in many cases, this cycle creates apathy—it is what it is. But that apathy doesn’t change the fact that patients are tired of waiting weeks or months to hear back from their practice for appointments that are over in minutes. I think patients are burned out. They’ve decided their time is more valuable than whatever it is they’re dealing with. Maybe they decided to take a supplement, or just rub some dirt on it and hope it goes away—anything to avoid waiting on hold. That’s where Statlinx comes in. We're able to supplement doctor’s office’s team by answering the phone when a patient calls. Just answering the phone helps practices keep a patient’s care on track when they otherwise might have given up. We have the potential to help increase access to doctors by 20% and reduce health care spending by around 15%. We have one of those jobs where we do something similar call after call after call. That can get very redundant until we talk about each story's impact. Last year, we cared for more than 1.5 million patients. For us, each one of those patients represents a story. We have the ability, and opportunity, to keep your patient’s on track and help guide each one towards a positive outcome in a timely manner.

Based on my own uniquely challenging healthcare journey and the significant lessons I’ve learned from that experience and in my capacity as Co-Founder of RiskAverse, I feel compelled to share my story in hopes of helping others find effective solutions for their own daunting health problems. Around a decade ago, I experienced a series of extraordinary accidents and injuries that left me in immense pain. As an aspiring healthcare provider, I naturally turned to the U.S. healthcare system for the answers I so desperately needed. However, after years of appointments with countless specialists, I instead found myself feeling lost and discouraged, fearing that my pain and suffering had become my “new normal”. At the time, I truly believed the system had completely failed me, just like it has failed so many others. Thankfully, this article is not another tragic story of a patient lost to the abyss. With the support of my friends and family, as well as my unrelenting determination, I was able to pick myself back up and use my experiences and resources to more effectively find the care that was right for me, with practitioners who truly listened to my story and never gave up on me. Thanks to the support of my loved ones and these remarkable practitioners, I can say that this painful part of my life is behind me. The lessons I learned through this experience lit a fire under me to make a true difference, and I knew something had to change. As a young adult with great access to care and a formidable support system even I almost lost to the system, which is why I pivoted my career goals from care practitioner to digital health founder.
