Was Prime Day(s) a huge success? The big event has come and gone, and we finally can take a breath. But the insights we’ve gathered are just heating up. Looking back at Prime Day’s impact: • In 2022, savings hit $1.7 billion with over 300 million items sold. • In 2023, customers saved $2.5 billion and bought 375 million items. • This year, Prime members purchased over 200 million items 😧 This shows how Prime Day is scaling and showcasing both opportunities and the intense competition among sellers to make the best out of this event. And the feedback from sellers varies wildly. Some sellers had fun with record sales, while others stumbled over hurdles. Understanding these mixed experiences is key since they not only reflect how it went for sellers in general but also guide us in preparing more effectively for future events. When was the last time a commercial: - Hit you in all the feels - Told a story that tied in directly to the product/service being marketed - Did it all without saying a word? I first saw Amazon's "Joy Ride" commercial when watching a college football game with family over Thanksgiving. And it had us smiling and then laughing out loud. My mom even texted it to her sister immediately, and we were all still talking about it later that evening. What is it about that commercial that I think was done so well? 👉 The lack of VO makes you look up from your phone and take notice of what's happening on screen. It pulls you in and you feel compelled to keep watching since you can't just listen to hear what happens. 👉 Everyone knows you can buy anything on Amazon, their logo shows that they sell everything from A to Z. But seeing a little old lady buy a donut-style seat cushion was unexpected and got your attention. 👉 It combines FOMO with nostalgia. You can relate to the ladies wanting to get off the bench and join in the fun, and you also remember the fun times you had going sledding as a kid. What do you think - do you like Amazon's holiday commercial? Fun Fact - my mom and tried to go sledding a few years ago, and it is NOT as easy as I remember it being. Three grandmas sled riding down a hill of fresh snow as though they were little girls again. The spot is called "Joy Ride". It's my favorite commercial this season. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, you can check out my post from last week to see the commercial and get my take on what makes it great marketing. But today I heard the audio version of the spot while streaming music, and in my opinion, it just doesn't work. Why? Because there are no words spoken in this commercial. It's only music. I think that's something that gets your attention when you see the video spot, but when you're streaming audio, you have no idea what the brand or message is. Sure, some people may look at their phone and see the corresponding video that plays. But many won't, so it's wasted placement dollars. This is a great example to show that what works in one outlet may not work in another. Consistency is key - but that doesn't mean you should run the exact same spot or ad everywhere. Adjust the creative to best work for the medium. If you don't, you could miss out connecting with your audience.
