Opening up Photonics😀 Following my previous post about why I dislike the phrase "pale, male and stale", one of the reasons I am involved in Opening up Photonics is that I see it as a chance to demonstrate that Diversity and Inclusion initiatives can: ✅Help industry travel the long road to solving some of it's talent shortage issues by active outreach and engagement with people at a stage in their academic careers that they are making the choices toward or away from the science subjects that the industry requires knowledge of. ✅ Highlight, showcase and evangelise about careers in Photonics and deep tech. ✅Demonstrate that diversity and inclusion initiatives do not have to be overly critical of an industry but rather enthuse it and work alongside the industry for the betterment of all. The message should be "welcome all, come on in, and join an amazing growing industry with wonderful career options and enjoy rewarding, challenging, stimulating and impactful work." Let's not alienate or offend one group of people in a bid to attract another.

Empowered teams take the lead! This year’s Zinnov Confluence in Bengaluru was a triumph for Micron Technology, which won the Women’s Innovator Award through our efforts to enhance diversity and inclusivity across the organization and semiconductor industry. Zinnov didn’t just recognize the efforts of large organizations, but remarkable individuals, as well. Kaveri Jain, a talented engineer and leader at Micron India, received the Next Generation Women Leader Award. A prestigious award that receives nominations from over 200 companies, the nominee is a source of inspiration, delivering excellence in individual, organizational, and sector development. Kaveri was chosen for her groundbreaking accomplishments, which include 30+ patents and leading India’s Micron Women’s Leadership Network resource group. On Day 2 I joined as a panel speaker discussing Micron’s people strategy and the importance of building a robust and diverse talent pipeline to meet talent demand and business growth. 30 years ago, there were 5 women engineers out of 100 new hires in the room. Through intentional planning and action, we’ve raised the number of women engineers in the room to more than 40 diverse and talented individuals. This was achieved through intentional strategies, culture, and action, and will keep growing as we continue to develop a more equitable future.
