How has the competitive landscape in the robotic knee surgery market evolved with the entry of companies like Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, and Johnson & Johnson? Stryker established a lead over J&J in the robotic space when it bought Mako Surgical in 2013, allowing it to offer advanced robotic-assisted surgery solutions. Zimmer Biomet entered the market when it received 510(k) clearance for its Rosa knee system in 2019, expanding the options available for robotic knee surgeries. J&J took longer to get to market, receiving its first U.S. Velys clearance in 2021. The company is now working to expand the use of its system, aiming to catch up with its competitors. The new Food and Drug Administration clearance covers the use of Velys in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), the medical term for partial knee replacement. J&J stated that while the procedure can aid in bone preservation and reduce recovery times, it remains underutilised due to obstacles like smaller incisions and limited visibility. The company identified “strong performance in hips and knees” as a driver of the 4.3% year-over-year growth of its orthopaedics unit in the first quarter earlier this year, underscoring the potential impact of the Velys system on its market position. Exciting insights from this interview with Aldo Denti, Chairman of Johnson & Johnson MedTech subsidiary DePuy Synthes, shedding light on the future of orthopedics. Aldo Denti discusses the profound impact of digital technology on the industry, particularly the migration of procedures to outpatient settings facilitated by surgical robots and other innovations. With expectations that up to 50% of total joint reconstructions could occur in ambulatory surgical centers within five years, it's evident that this trend is not confined to the U.S. alone but is gaining traction globally. Aldo Denti also highlights the types of procedures moving to ASCs, ranging from sports-related surgeries to more complex cases like hip and knee replacements. Moreover, he underscores the significant role of robotics in orthopedics, foreseeing a future where robotically-enhanced knees become commonplace.Orthopedics

Robots aren’t taking over the world yet, but it looks like they’re close! And, when it comes to precision surgeries, I say let them! Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s orthopedics division has just received FDA clearance for their Velys surgical robot, which is designed to deliver precise placements in medial and lateral procedures without the need for a CT scan. The use of a robotic system will also enable more reproducible and consistent outcomes, and I think this is a sign of good things to come! The higher the success rate of a surgery, the better, so we can only hope we start to see even more robots involved in surgery. ---------------------------------------------------- While I can’t program robots to help you with your CX strategy, I can offer 25 years worth of experience in CX 😉, so if you’d like to find out more, you can click the link below: https://lnkd.in/dRPunNGk

Orthopaedic & Medical Device Specialist @ JBAndrews | Headhunter | Partnerships, Innovation, Results✨
𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒐 𝑩𝒖𝒛𝒛: 𝑭𝑫𝑨 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒔 & 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆-𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉💪 The orthopedic medical device industry is buzzing with innovation, highlighted by MiRus® recently securing FDA approval for its #Europa minimally invasive spinal fusion system, and a new distribution agreement between Zimmer Biomet and THINK Surgical to offer the TMINI® Robotic System for enhanced knee implant precision.🤝 However, an undeniable facet impacting the Orthopaedic space is AI. 🚀 The demand for orthopedic surgeries is at an all-time high, but there is a significant shortage of orthopaedic surgeons to meet this need. 📈 The solution? AI. (Controversial, maybe?) With the surge in patient data, a relentless push for surgical precision, and rising expectations for post-surgical outcomes, AI is set to play an increasingly vital role in orthopaedics, both in and out of the OR. 💡 Companies to watch out for👀 👉NanoHive Medical who has recently closed $7m in Series C financing to develop and commercialise its 3D-printed titanium spinal interbody fusion devices. 👉Enhatch with their U2 Total Knee System, which creates Patient Specific Instrumentation using either X-ray or CT images to enhance surgery accuracy. 👉PeekMed® who has created an AI pre-operative planning system for orthopedic surgery making the planning and revision surgery much more efficient, predictable and accurate. Whilst AI can increase accuracy and reduce time, do you think AI is a positive aspect to the Ortho space?🤔 Let me know in the comments below👇 #orthopaedicnews #industryupdate #orthobuzz

Great read on the current state of robotics and orthopedics.
This may be the hottest topic in robotics now and The Journal of Orthopaedic Experience & Innovation is proud to publish this Editorial from Industry on this topic. The author Stuart Simpson, the CEO of THINK Surgical- a company that makes an implant-agnostic robotic approach to surgery eloquently laid out the reasons for such an approach. Zimmer Biomet is one of approximately 8 companies that have arrangements with this method. Kudos to Stuart Simpson for taking the big risk on this approach! You need to read this #editorial and see if you agree.
