Reflecting on past projects is always an enlightening journey. I recall one of my initial gabion designs, which, while structurally straightforward, presented a complex geotechnical challenge. Back then, my focus was homed in on the technicalities: the moments and forces, water interaction, and the durability of the structure. Fast forward to today, as I peruse photographs of these past projects, I recognize a shift in my perspective. Transitioning from a structural engineer to a specialist in urban resilience has broadened my view. Now, I perceive the intricate connections between our structures and the urban fabric, the resilience of our cities, and the profound social impact they harbor. Twas the night before the SEAoNY Annual, when all through the type-5 house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The presenter notes were stacked in Whova, steel manuals tabbed with care, In hopes that Dr. Geschwindner soon would be there; The engineers were nestled all snug in their base-isolated beds; While visions of "code changes through the years" danced in their heads; And mamma in her safety vest, and I in my hardhat-cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the NYC streets there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter. Away to the impact-rated-window I flew like a flash, Tore open the wind-proofed shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen ground snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did come into view, But a not-so-miniature moustache and 7 PDHs to accrue, With a quick jaunt to the trade show sesh, I knew in a moment he must be Dr. Gesch, More info-packed than books alone the lecture courses they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Design Steel Your Way! now, Building Codes and How We Got Here! now Geotechnical Peer Review and ASCE 7 Flood Loads! On, Evolution and Implications of Seismic Design Accelerations of New Buildings in NYC! on, Reinforcing Steel Specs from 1910 to Today! and on, Mass Timber in the Building Codes!"
