🍏 Apple’s Vision for Spatial Gaming👓 The game industry is aflutter with speculation over the viability of Apple’s Vision Pro as a potentially disruptive new gaming platform. While most industry observers are skeptical that Vision Pro will reinvent gaming in the same way Apple’s iPhone and App Store did, it’s worth taking a closer look at how this new device changes the dynamics of the AR/VR market — or what Apple is now referring to as “spatial computing.” Vision Pro is clearly not marketed to the average customer, let alone gamers of any sort. It clocks in at $3,499 for the base 256 GB model and closer to $4,000 if you want things like a travel case, AppleCare+, and optical inserts for prescription glasses. The Sony PSVR2 is one of the first 4K OLED HMD displays for VR. The company aims to enable players to connect their PS VR2 headsets to PCs later this year in order to access more games. “We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5”, it said on the PlayStation Blog. “We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.” The blog post also covered a number of PS VR2 game announcements, including the reveal of Rebellion’s Zombies Army VR, which will be released later this year. PS5’s virtual reality headset launched in February 2023 for $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 and sales reportedly got off to a slow start. The following month, Sony president and soon to be interim PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki said he thought PS VR2 had a “good chance” of outselling its predecessor, which launched for PS4 in October 2016 and sold over five million units. In October, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior vice president and head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, described VR as a meaningful business for the company, but one that was yet to reach its’s potential. “The VR category is important to us. It’s a category that can help us with innovation,” he said. “It’s never going to be the only way people play games, but I’m happy that we’re in it. There are great experiences to be had and consumers really like it. But it’s a nascent business for us.” And in December, Lempel told the Financial Times that VR “is a bit of a challenging category right now”, despite Sony’s own sales reportedly “going well”. I am the Arcade and Console Generation. My first game on PC was Prince of Persia and Snakes on my Nokia Phone. However, times continue to change. Mobile and PC continue to chip away from the console. Handheld gaming revenues peaked in 2007, the year the iPhone launched, and have steadily declined since then as smartphone adoption has grown. With smartphones came the mobile gaming juggernaut, which has made up more than half of the gaming industry’s revenues since 2019. In the last few years, however, the development of augmented and virtual reality’s more immersive and sensory-heavy experiences has created yet another platform for video game aand ananother avenue for growth. Watch out for this space this will more extensive than all combined in the next 20 years with Higher mobile penetration in asia willion will continue to drive mobile game revenue. ▶ Playing Nintendo 3DS games in a Quest headset works surprisingly well using the Citra VR emulator now available via SideQuest. 🏎 Here I am trying out Mario Kart 7 on a lowly Quest 2 that I threw in my bag since I am travelling at the moment. Graphics run smoothly, although the sound skips a little in places. 🏁 Playing like this is more fun than on a 3DS, and instead of being an annoyance as it is on the 3DS, the 3D effect is quite cool on the Quest. The virtual screen on the Quest is of course incomparably much bigger, and interestingly the graphics quality is not suffering from the upscaling. 📦 The whole experience is incomparably much better than what Nintendo went ahead and did after the 3DS with their cardboard VR holder for the Switch in the Nintendo Labo series. Nintendo managed to get just everything wrong with that one, from comfort to graphics quality. 💾 But I had to go through lots of hoops to back up my 3DS game cartridge and put it on the Quest. Now that they have the Mario Run app on smartphones, imagine if Nintendo would also start selling their 3DS library on the Quest store! 🥽 Will Nintendo and other big game publishers eventually see the opportunity in converting their 3D back catalogues to modern VR headsets? We can just wish and hope!
