I had the opportunity to attend Australian Healthcare Week #AHW in Sydney this week and to hear from industry experts on the forefront of health technology, age care evolution, and the transformative power of patient-centric healthcare. Session highlights for me included: ♦️ Empowering Patient-Centric Care: Stewart Dowrick, Frank Tracey, Brendan Goodger and Colleen Jen debating what is needed to put the patient at the heart of healthcare decision making and if we are bold enough to move from treatment to prevention. → We need to put people back in the equation and change mindsets to bring about change in service delivery (hospital → home-based care) → Healthcare 2040 opportunities…integration of dental care; more education/engagement around social determinants; cultural integration and making genomics mainstream to support home-based care.   ♦️ The AI Frontier: Nirvana Luckraj, Dr John F. This little tool is perhaps the most loved/hated piece of innovation in healthcare. Behold the Almighty Bleep! For the younger generation who is likely confused, We use bleeps in hospitals to get hold of people. It works like this: 1. You dial a number on a phone (Usually 88 or 8888). 2. An automated voice asks you to input a bleep number (12345# for instance). 3. You input your phone's number (12346# for instance). 4. The message sends off and some poor medics bleep goes off. 5. You wait patiently by the phone for a reply. Five unavoidable, glorious steps you need to get a hold of a healthcare member of staff. 🙃 ______________________________ The #NHS itself uses 10% of the ENTIRE WORLD's remaining bleeps at a cost of £6.6 million a year. And to be fair, bleeps are: - Pretty durable (Many have been dropped and survived) - Works everywhere (I have gotten bleeped 5 miles away from the hospital) - Lasts forever (Mine is probably older than I am) But the major cons are: - They emit an ungodly, blood curdling beep. (My wife dressed as a bleep for Halloween, and won the most spooky costume) - Create lots of unnecessary delay reaching #clinicians. (GPs and nurses can sometimes wait up to 30 minutes for a call back) - It is really easy to miss someone who bleeped you. (Ever call back a bleep in 0.1ms and the person does not pick up?) All this means that a lot of time is wasted trying to reach someone to help your patient. ____________________________ Bleeps are like the cockroaches of healthcare #innovation, they are likely going to be here long after we are gone. I think it is also a reminder of how slow and difficult it is for #healthcare to take up new innovations. 📞 Phones exists. 📧 Instant messaging exists. 📲 Countless communication apps exists. But it is difficult for entire health systems to change their ways completely overnight - not when something kinda works exists already. If you are a #HealthTech innovator looking to "disrupt" healthcare, my advice to you is the same as the one I gave my junior doctor waiting for a call back from her bleep- It's gonna take a while. 😅 (I can't believe I am actually writing a post about bleeps in 2024.)
