These three values guide our decision making and goals as an organization. We aim to COMPENSATE women and girls impacted by incarceration directly to ensure their most pressing immediate needs are adequately met and reduce the rate of recidivism. A kind word and gesture goes a long way, but often in the case of women and girls impacted by incarceration, their most pressing needs are material and financial. They need assistance with paying their rents or mortgages to ensure that they can keep their homes and house their families. They need the funding to purchase books, pay tuition, or secure childcare while they attend school. They need menstrual products to fully and hygienically manage their cycles while incarcerated. Barnardo’s have published a report on discrimination, racism, exclusion and isolation faced by young Black people within the care system, including residential settings, foster care placements, education, mental health provision and prison. Discussions include; young people being ignored when reporting racial abuse, care staff involving the Police as a tool of discipline in non-criminal matters and inconsistent support from Social Workers. Recommendations include: the introduction of a Black Foster Care network, timely access to mental health support, full implementation of the Lammy Review and urgent action from the Government to prevent the unnecessary criminalisation of children in care. We aim to PRIORITIZE women who have been impacted by incarceration due to the lack of resources available to them that address the gendered trauma associated with incarceration. Too often, currently and formerly incarcerated people and the children of those who have been incarcerated, especially women and girls, are rendered invisible and discarded. They are shut out from opportunities, held captive by their pasts and circumstances, and cast aside to fend for themselves. At TPF, we rectify this lack of care and humanity by dedicating all of the work we do to uplifting these women and girls, shining a light on their issues, and providing them with resources to support themselves and often, their families. I’ve been thinking about the act of curating safety - being an innovative action for over a year. It was the seed that made me create the Safety and Sanctuary Summit that will happen later this year. As a formerly incarcerated person and former Executive Director of Black & Pink National , this beautiful work from maisha quint from Libra Foundation - brings so many moments of resonance. The truth is that nearly 15 years post incarceration, as a Black Trans Woman I am still without a robust experience of safety. Along with dr. monique liston and Ubuntu Research & Evaluation, LLC, I’m eager to explore the nexus of safety and environmental justice through evaluation for this first time in The Fund for Trans Generations. How do spaces and locations, including states like Florida and Texas, impact the safety and lived experiences of transgender individuals? It's clear that our existence isn't the sole factor; environmental conditions, much like the impacts of global warming, play a significant role in our safety. How can we then strategize and create safer environments for transgender people within the framework of environmental justice? Let's discuss ways to foster safety and inclusivity, recognizing the unique challenges faced by our community. #EnvironmentalJustice #TransSafety #InclusiveSpaces

We have to have a long-term lens when looking at how we can address our youth justice system 'crisis'. As Benjamin Knight current approaches are failing our young people. We need to invest in our youth, invest in our communities, and invest in what works. Our young people deserve more than simplistic solutions that may serve short-term political goals (i.e., the appearance of providing an immediate response) and are focused on responding to youth crime rather than addressing the root causes. #youthjustice #evidencebasedprograms #rootcauses

🔴 $1.4 billion spent since 2015 🔴 267 kids aged 10-17 in custody on an average day in 2022 🔴 100,425 total nights spent by youth in custody - highest in Australia 🔴 60% of kids spent over 30 nights in custody before sentencing 🔴 6 boys known to the system tragically died in 2022/23, 4 were Indigenous 🔴 Over 90% of released youth reoffended within 12 months in 2021 This is a Qld youth justice system in crisis, failing the most vulnerable young people. The human toll is immense, with nearly half of young offenders disengaged from school/work, exposed to domestic violence, parental incarceration, and mental illness. Investing in more detention centres at $500M+ while operating costs hit $761K per child per year is unsustainable. It's time to bring community-led solutions to the forefront. I don't have all the answers but I know a tonne of people looking to do great work from Brodie Germaine in Mount Isa (Fitness and Camping on Country), Worldview Foundation and Kurt Gruber with employment and training, Joe Kwon and ConFit Pathways offering mentoring and fitness, Kate Bjur support vision and new ways of working, A/Prof Corey Tutt OAM and DeadlyScience support STEM engagement, Youth Advocacy Centre (YAC) supporting with legal and advocacy - there are countless changemakers with the experience to drive real reform. When you search for "Youth Justice support Qld", government sites dominate. I can't see any young people feeling excited to change by reading this stuff. Imagine the impact if these community leaders were elevated, giving at-risk youth visible mentors and a sense of hope. Top-down approaches have failed - it's time to amplify grassroots voices and back those with lived experience to lead the way forward. Real change won't come from grants or reviews alone. We need action - supporting those with solutions to keep kids out of custody, address root causes, and break the cycle for good. We have had to cover most of the cost of Deadly labs justice because no one has come forward to fund it long term. These kids deserve STEM education and it is unacceptable we continue to deprive these kids of the very best resources to engage them in STEM. Just because you’ve made mistakes doesn’t mean you should be lost to STEM. We need your support to change the future, if you own any business this is an investment because we are solving two of your problems- More diverse workforce- Skilled STEM professionals. Extract-Establishing anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practices in social work Many children and young people who come from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities experience racism, bias, stereotyping or cultural misunderstanding as they grow up. It might happen at an individual, institutional or societal level and might be displayed consciously or unconsciously. This can result in some children being more likely to come to the attention of child protection services, while other children are less likely to receive effective support (Nuffield Foundation, 2020). When we talk about people from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities we’re referring to a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds with different individual experiences, including different experiences of racism. This includes groups such as Gypsy, Traveller and Roma communities. To make sure children from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities get the help and support they need, the adults working or volunteering with them and their families need to: understand the challenges they face build trusting relationships take appropriate action to help keep children safe use a strength-based approach to empower parents and carers from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities to take steps to keep their children safe. Our response to this often focuses on boys, but Orlene Badu looks at the barriers faced by students who are both female and of black heritage… Racism that black girls experience in schools is not just a problem for those experiencing it now. It is a factor to consider when reviewing the lack of black teachers in the UK – have their experiences in school when they were children compounded a lack of representation in our school staff today? Analysis of workforce statistics from 2019 show that 85.7% of all female teachers in state-funded schools in England were white British in comparison to 2.2% identified as black heritage.
