There was a time when architects were the master builders. Where architects profoundly understood construction systems and processes. Over time, the role of the architect steered towards more design-oriented tasks. And that's what we are generally known for. Some architects are not forged on the construction site. Some think that they can design without any constraints. And when they face physicality and construction logistics, there's a surge in budget and execution time forecast. Architects should get a job in construction at some point in their careers. There's more than form, shape, and aesthetics. Architecture is about constructability. As a BIM enthusiast (and this may bias me), this is the reason I believe that BIM cannot be rightly and fully implemented without the knowledge of construction technology. BIM is simply construction technology using digital tools. It is doing virtually what is, and will be, done physically on site. It is responding to site and project conditions and constraints first virtually, before doing it physically. The I in BIM must be the Information that constitutes construction technology.
