HYBE’s -12% (YoY) revenue and -72.6% (YoY) net operating profit nosedives in Q1 are definitely headline numbers, but I find the -21.3% hit to its recorded music revenue more insightful. HYBE’s primary act, BTS, which, as Music Business Worldwide (MBW) indicates, is “arguably the largest K-pop group in the world,” has historically obtained unprecedented and consistent levels of fan activation and engagement. However, since its members are adhering to Korea’s mandatory military service, the super group will not be releasing new music until at least 2025. The reduction in HYBE’s recorded music revenue demonstrates the importance of distributing a constant flow of music (not just content) to your fans. For non-legacy acts, content, publicity strategies, and tours (HYBE nearly turning all of this into an art itself) will never be enough for an artist to achieve their maximum potential revenue per fan or engagement without releasing high-quality, innovative music in tandem. Since entertainment today is highly reliant on consistent artist-fan interactions, hoping your catalog captures the value from these non-music efforts (for most artists) can only go so far. The best artist-fan interaction will always be releasing authentic new music. Live Nation break up with Ticketmaster could be the first step towards more innovation in the ticketing industry 🔖 The U.S. Department of Justice filed a competition lawsuit against entertainment giant Live Nation, alleging that the company holds a "monopoly" over the U.S. entertainment market. The lawsuit reportedly focuses on Ticketmaster's practice of using exclusive ticketing contracts with venues, which critics argue stifles competition, limits customer choice, and drives up prices. This comes along with the new legislation in the US, UK, and Australia requiring event ticket sellers to display the total ticket price upfront, including all fees. This may compel ticketing companies to lower some of their fees to remain competitive, eventually resulting in revenue losses. In response, these companies will need to explore new ways to differentiate themselves and secure new deals. One strategy is to offer promoters and clients resale platforms, allowing them to control both primary and secondary markets and capture extra revenue that currently goes to unauthorized resellers. However, in light of the recent case, implementing this approach may prove challenging. Controlling both markets can lead to unethical practices, such as placing a percentage of tickets directly on the secondary market to capitalize on higher earnings. This may raise red flags to regulators who might try to stop such behavior. This could open the door for 3rd party white-label resale platforms who could cover the functionality for the ticketing companies while seamlessly integrating. However, to really fully stop illegal reselling, providers would need to use technology that substitutes classic tokens which can be easily exchanged. Biometrics could give a helping hand. The vision would be to link 1 face with exactly 1 ticket, disabling bots and companies like Viagogo from buying thousands of tickets. Having this would bring the added value and necessary differentiation for the ticketing firms. What about the collaborative outcome? ✅Fans would benefit from fair market prices ✅More genuine transactions would occur on the primary ticket market ✅Fans would have the flexibility to free their tickets ✅Every transaction would be under the control of the ticketing company, reducing fraud ✅Ticketing firms would bring promoters more revenues, making the company a valuable partner So the main idea is for ticketing firms to implement technologies that will make them stand out and deliver unprecedented value to its customers that leads to higher profits. My feed’s been filled with “major announcements” from #Eventim, #Ticketmaster and #AXS telling me they’ve partnered with #TikTok.. #Spotify knows precisely how much we enjoy our favourite music and what we’ve learned from that data over the years is that the audience listening vs people buying the tickets largely aren’t the same folk.. I can’t imagine Tiktok will have anywhere near as much relevant music consumption data but I’m sure marketing teams are salivating at the prospect of reaching new audiences (..ignoring the fact the it’ll be a while before they’re able to afford to buy a ticket) A question for anyone delivering on their version of the partnership, are transactions completed in a widget within TikTok or will the app simply offer an artist redirect to the relevant ticket agent for each territory and you have to hunt around to find tickets for yourself? ..I suspect it’ll generate decent returns from resale for those agents offering 🫤 Suffice it to say, I’m not convinced this one is something anyone will still be shouting about in 12-18 months, but I’d love to be proved wrong.. https://lnkd.in/e8_de9sy
