The power of community ✊ Plaza Community Cinema is a gorgeous art deco cinema in Waterloo which was brought back to life as a result of a community campaign. It’s run by a small team and lots of very willing volunteers. I was back there last week for the Banff Mountain Film Festival - which I'd highly recommend if it's visiting a town near you! - and reminded of: 1️⃣ The appreciation and love people have for local places with history, with heritage - their willingness to learn and treasure them. 2️⃣ The value of having such wonderful, accessible meeting spaces which can be enjoyed with friends and create opportunities to meet new people. 3️⃣ Just how much is achievable with groups of well meaning people come together. After all, back in 1995 planning permission was requested for the site to be redeveloped into offices. Yet, due to community organising, it was reopened in 1997 and bought by the Plaza Community Cinema chairity in 2000 🙌 Despite being a charity the vast majority of their income comes from trading activities - cinema tickets and kiosk sales - which means their income is unrestricted and can be invested in ways which the community value the most. It gives comfort that the benefits the cinema has aren’t depended on grant funding which can be inconsistent, restricted in its use and come with time consuming reporting requirements. 🍿 Could you imagine your local Odeon or Vue charging just £5.90 for an adult cinema ticket? ☕️ Or running monthly Warm Welcome community screenings with snacks, a hot drink and FREE admission during the cold season to give people somewhere nice and warm to enjoy locally? Some Charities are content with qualifying a grant recipient, disbursing the funds and moving onto the next. However, by doing this they are missing out on a trick. When there is a disparity 🤷♂️ between Charity grant funds and grant funds received, public confidence lowers. Consequentially, public donations tend to fall. But if Charities track the funds, the pendulum will swing the other way. Statistics have shown that once diligence and transparency on grants funds delivered/received increases so does public confidence. And yes you guessed it... so do public donations. The 2023 edition of The Conference formerly known as Conversion Hotel was a special edition. The 10th edition, the golden edition. I just read all the extensive feedback attendees provided through the survey we sent last week. The average attendee experience score on a scale from 1 (awful) to 5 (awesome) was 4.96! Our Net Promotor Score Score is +97, wow, Thank you! Just published is the #CH2023 event overview website, with: 1. #CH2023 - The Video, a 4 minute summary by Piet van Steen (who also recorded the full-length keynote videos, which will be released soon for the video access members). 2. #CH2023 - The Album, with the songs Tobi Lessnow (Baldower) created for every keynote speaker - highly recommended listen. 3. #CH2023 - The Speakers - 1 speaker from each of the 10 editions of Conversion Hotel (Michael Aagaard, Tim Stewart, Lucia van den Brink ✨️, André Morys, Simone Neeling, Annegien Bruins Slot, Karl Gilis, Joanna Wiebe, Els Aerts, and Greg Shapiro) with their slides, notes of their talk, and small video intros. 4. #CH2023 - The Memories, a fun selection of pictures from the event. 5. #CH2023 - The Shared Folder, containing all slides, songs, pictures etc. Check out the #CH2023 event overview website here: https://lnkd.in/eJAnmcfY During the event, the attendees played games and raised €2664 for Texel charities with their team tasks. I received great feedback on moving away from welcome packages leading to waste, to team bonding games to raise money for charity. Together with our local connections on Texel, we decided that we will donate: 1. €1250 to Stichting Tesselhuus - they organize holidays on Texel for people with physical disabilities. 2. €1414 to Het Texelfonds - the local community fund of Texel.
