It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure. - While lupus mainly affects women between the ages of 15-44, men and children are not spared. - Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys. - Only three drugs have been developed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat lupus. May is CF awareness month! Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. At present, there is no cure. People with CF create thick, sticky mucus in their bodies. This makes it hard to absorb fat and nutrients, which is why a good cystic fibrosis diet is one that is high in calories and high in fat. There are a number of new medications available for CF patients, but they aren’t cures and they’re very expensive. More research is needed! Imagine a simple blood test that could revolutionise how coeliac disease is diagnosed. Coeliac Australia is proud to support groundbreaking research by Associate Professor Jason Tye-Din and PhD student Olivia Moscatelli that makes this a possibility.     This innovative test detects an immune response to gluten in the blood, specifically the cytokine Interleukin 2 (IL-2). Unlike traditional methods, the IL-2 test does not require a lengthy gluten challenge, making the diagnostic process less burdensome and more accessible.     The test offers several advantages: it is non-invasive, convenient, accurate and delivers quick results without needing specialist technicians. It has garnered extensive global interest, indicating strong potential for widespread adoption.     Despite the remarkable results, more work is still needed, including fine-tuning the test for different genetic sub-types and testing in children.
