Risk Management: Contingency reserves are a key component of risk management, ensuring that the project has the necessary funds to address potential risks without affecting the overall budget. Usage: The use of contingency reserves is typically planned and documented as part of the risk management plan. They are used to cover the costs of risk responses when identified risks materialize. Control: Project managers usually have the authority to use contingency reserves as needed, based on the risk management plan and project governance policies. Example: In a software development project, the project manager might allocate a contingency reserve of 15% of the total project cost to cover potential risks such as scope changes, technical challenges, or resource availability issues. This reserve is included in the cost baseline to ensure that the project can address these risks without requiring additional funding.
