I'm excited to share that I'm starting a new chapter in my career, focusing on my passion for writing and creativity. After years of exploring different roles, I've realized that true happiness comes from doing what aligns with my life goals, not just pursuing financial gains. I've learned a lot from my experiences and the people I had the pleasure to work with, choosing to focus on the positive. I've understood that I can't be everything to everyone, and that's okay. Currently, I'm seeking a remote role where I can contribute as a content writer, copywriter, or content strategist. Also, while there's plenty of detail on job requirements, few companies clearly communicate what they offer in terms of work culture and employee benefits. To employers out there, remember that your staff and team members are your most important clients. Make your job postings as appealing and welcoming as possible. If I were hiring, I'd ask specific questions to understand a candidate better. When looking at a copywriter or content writer, do you go for a subject specialist, with a specific niche, or a very good generalist? I think, if using a freelancer, it's probably better to hire a subject specialist (health and wellbeing, finance, luxury goods, fashion, education etc), as you'll probably be hiring them for a shorter period of time/a project, so it's important that none of that time is wasted. It's better that they, as an expert on the topic, get on with writing about it straight way. But what about for full-time, permanent positions? Yeah, it's good to have someone come in and hit the ground running straight away, but what if a generalist is potentially even better once they get up to speed on the given topic? I've written, across my career, about PhDs, collision protection systems, the weaning of infants, savings and investments, the Amazon rainforest, luxury food, technology, gaming etc (you get the gist). Each time I had to do this, I had to learn about the topic from scratch... but I knew about it, enough to write as a subject matter expert, within two weeks. So, as a recruiter, do you go for someone who has a portfolio full of niche examples or do you go for someone who's covered a broad range of topics, and shown they can adapt to a new niche pretty quickly?

Why do people post a job with a specific title, yet the description is not for that job? Take this recent example: Content writer: Must be able to create a marketing plan, sell products, and create relationships with investors. Confused? Or how about… Editor: Must be organized, punctual, creative with concepts and writing ability, and able to create copy with tight turnaround times. What am I missing? Honestly, this isn’t a real question. People are filling roles incorrectly and then wonder why they have turnover or why they can’t find a freelancer who fits the bill. If you need a writer, hire a writer. If you need an editor, hire an editor. Need a marketer? You guessed it. Create roles for professionals who can shine rather than dimming their light by trying to make them spread themselves too thin so you can save money.

Jumping in to join the party. I mean, it's not a fun party. It's the party of "I'm reminding everyone I'm open to work." It's a party most of us didn't want to be invited to but had to go to out of obligation. And you know what? We keep walking up to folks to start a conversation, and they just walk away! In the words of Stephanie Tanner, "How rude." Worse, some folks approach us, start a conversation, and then walk away before we even respond. But I digress. I'm #OpenToWork I've worked in content marketing for 10 years now, starting my career on the agency side as an editor before transitioning to content strategy. Since then, I've worked both as a freelancer and in-house. I've created in-house style guides, interviewed SMEs, and written and edited every type of content piece under the sun (ebooks, white papers, blogs, scripts, oh my!), including product marketing assets like one-pagers, sales decks and product announcements. I've managed freelancers, one or two internal copywriters, and vendor relationships. I've even dipped my foot into design and video editing (that scriptwriting degree has to come into play at some point!). I'm ready for the next step in my career. Any Content Writers/Managers here? Here’s a story: I joined Headsup as a freelance content writer. Got a PPO to join as the Lead Editorial Associate. 3 years, and it's been a year since I have been here as a D&I consultant. It is as crazy to have a career graph like this as it is to assume that your folks would give you such an opportunity. But then mine is one of the many such crazy stories at Headsup Corporation. Stories of faith, giving people a chance, asking them what they want to do, and giving them the wings to do it. I enjoyed my role in Content as much as I enjoy my role in DEI. In both, I was (am) encouraged to take risks, be a little controversial, and push my own boundaries further. I can say that for both, I was given the freedom to define the role more than the role defined me. That is the freedom of fluidity that a creative person gets at Headsup; the space to think, a space where your artistic eccentricities and expressions are embraced. We even have an exclusive club for such creative minds: The Creative Junta. And I am a proud Alum! Well, now as a Consultant in DEIB, I am designing solutions to address people's biases, lack of inclusive infrastructure and provisions, missing representation, lack of communities and safe spaces to belong...you get the idea. But if your demons are still a writer's block, that one synonym you can’t find, that idea that is just not clicking or the edits you must make to your precious work… JOIN US. I got a lot of opportunities to stare at a blank Google doc and write and edit till we got it right. I got a chance to manage content end-to-end and learn how to write to brand, to sell.
