Decades ago, when I first entered the workforce and heard from my colleagues that my name was “exotic” and hard to pronounce – and then they insisted it was a compliment––I couldn’t quite put my finger on why this didn’t sit right with me. Or questions about my “good” English or how “normal” I spoke (yes, all the above has happened.)  Then I found the term “microaggressions”–and it was an aha moment for me. But I think it’s time to retire the term, especially as so many more people understand what these look like. I’m also hesitant about “micro” which doesn’t quite capture the cumulative and pervasive effect these exclusionary actions have on those who experience them.
