Very nice to chat with THE Herbie Skeete, inventor of the Reuters Instrument Code (RIC) - that to this day connects humans to interfaces to data across global equities markets (and more). We’d never met in person. Legend and a super nice guy. The RIC is made up primarily of the security's ticker symbol followed by a period and exchange code based on the name of the stock exchange using that ticker. For instance, IBM.N is a valid RIC, referring to IBM being traded on the New York Stock Exchange. IBM.L refers to the same stock trading on the London Stock Exchange. RICs are powerful through their symplicity - and human readability. However - as markets have become more complex, and exchange tickets are reused (eg SNOW.N) machine readable tickers are often used in place of the RIC for greater precision in non-human workflows. I am somewhat outraged that they renamed it the “Refinitiv Identification Code!”. Now with Refinitiv dead - I vote its name is reverted! David Schwimmer can you make it so? For more on the RIC and the story behind it check out: https://lnkd.in/et8qsteM Fun fact - he wanted the RIC to be freely licensed - but was vetoed by Glen Refrew - CEO at the time. Ps Nice to also meet you Justin Corp - another Reuters alumnus. Open #permid #figi Closed #cusip #sedol
There is more to a RIC than the simplified explanation given. But I have never ever heard anyone use any name other than RIC or Reuters Instrument Code 😁
Great photo Tim Baker, great to see you, Herbie Skeete and Justin Corp looking so well. Always enjoy seeing the <RTR.L> alumni from these posts, and here's something else that will make you all smile that's RIC related (1st ed. not to hand right now, Editor credit to Elke Behrend, and 3rd ed. was a PDF).
Many inventions become generically known by their originator. My hoover isn’t made by Hoover. So reverting back to Reuters makes sense (should never have been changed)! However if the option was there for completely redesignating it, Herbie’s Instrument Code would get my vote 😀 Great to see you both looking well!
RIC rolled again.
Wow, what a cool story! Refinitive Identification Code? Really? What an absolute abomination. At least they haven't tried to rename it to LIC (LSEG Instrument Code) 🤣 . If the RIC had been freely licensed it would have taken over the world. #LostOpportunity.
haha 3 coffees - it wouldn't have been coffees in the 90's
The RIC was almost a second language for me supporting capital market clients navigating the Reuters Terminal in the 90s and 00s! Type <REUTERS> and enter! Voila! ODD +F9 was the best for unusual news stories!
No one "invented" RICS they were originally shortened currency and instrument names. At Reuters it was understood that it was John Taylor who insisted on licensing RICS around 2001. I still can't see how he did it. It's like licensing the latin names for plants. At Telerate we used similar and more often than not the same ticker names back in the 80s and 90's. The markets created their own standard.
So many opportunities to lead - blown by failing to follow Herbie’s advice and open source the RIC. Renfrew built the company Reuters became in so many other ways but unfortunately missed this one.

1moBtw - the ticker is open source. The exchange code is open and ISO certified standard. The dot - well is the dot. So how can the combo of the three be protected. It’s not like it’s a book, or a painting.
