Following a tender, we were contracted by a facilities management company to remediate the foul and surface water drainage networks of a business park in Wiltshire which were both in a poor state of repair. Due to our thorough programme of works, drainage across the site has been greatly improved. The critical issues of broken and collapsed pipe sections were all addressed. The less severe problems have also been resolved, preventing them from developing into critical issues in the future. Owners of sewage treatment plants in England & Wales need to look out for two new updates to the General Binding Rules, which come into effect in 2nd October 2023. These updates apply to tanks that discharge into water sources, and are designed to protect the water quality of our lakes, rivers, and streams etc. Essentially, the combined volume of the discharge from tanks and any other discharges into the same water body must not exceed the government's limits. Plus, tanks must be more than 50m from any other activity that discharges water into the ground or surface water. New case study: Offwell Storm Tank: The provision of 30m3 of offline stormwater storage in Honiton, Devon. Offwell is a small village on the outskirts of Honiton just off the A35. The existing sewage treatment works was constructed in the 1980s and serves a population of around 350. It was typical of the era, with an old style Dortmund tank with percolating filter and humus tank off the back end. Final effluent from here gravitates out from the site to Offwell Brook. The driver for the scheme was to reduce the number of unconsented spills to the environment by providing a capacity of 30m3 storm storage. The most cost-efficient solution was to (i) construct a part buried concrete rectangular stormwater storage tank with capacity of 30m3, (ii) install a new LCP for the control of duty/standby pump for return of effluent within the storm tank, (iii) relocate the existing MCERTS final effluent flow meter , and (iv) instal new pipelines between existing equipment and new storm tank.
