The zoo industry is no place for those that think they can fake it until they make it. But alas there are some in positions from management to keeping positions in zoos and safari parks that have faked their CVs or their claims of experience and skills, foolishly thinking that if they fake it long enough no one will be wise to their lack of knowledge and experience. The problem with this type of person is the damage they can do to the park and its reputation while they bumble their way from one mistake to the next. Not to mention the demoralizing affect they have on those that work with them that have done the right thing and worked hard to gain the skills needed to do the job correctly and then need to deal with the actions and mistakes made by those that have taken the short cuts by faking it.  Often these people that are faking it will never take responsibility for their lack of experience and skills, rather they will try to shift the blame on to others, never admitting that they have no idea what they are doing. This is why it’s better to start at the bottom and work your way up, “if that is your goal.” And it goes without saying that this is the slow way to advance and at times it will seem that it's taking too long to get where you want to be, but while you are climbing the ladder you can learn from making mistakes, and gain the experience needed to one day take on the position of authority knowing that you haven’t faked your way there. So, when problems do come up you will have a better understanding on how to deal with them correctly. But more importantly your team will respect you as a leader knowing that you haven’t faked it but rather that you have gained your skills and experience by doing the time and learning from mistakes. Yesterday was National Pets day … (Any excuse to celebrate / share / obsess over my dogs and I’m here 😂) But to loosely add some work related value … these two have been the best coaching CPD I’ve ever invested in! - I have two wildly different ‘team member personalities’ to work with - I have to find what works for them in order to get the result I need - My communication is completely different with each dog - patience …. Spec work - Salmon Fishing on Lake Vättern, Sweden 2023 I shot this short film in the autumn of 2023, it was a spec shoot for a bigger project I had in mind and also chance to re-alling myself and my approach back towards I direction I felt comfortable in. Moving from the UK to Sweden was a challenge but one that I embraced and on the whole have enjoyed however, the pandemic took it's toll. A big interruption to workflow and process that I had become accustom to and enjoyed, I was regularly making work I was proud of and happy to share and publish. The uncertainty during the pandemic and also the negative economic impacts post pandemic that started to hit the major global economies left me feeling lost, I took on a lot of work and projects that I was maybe not proud of or would never share outside of conversations with the client. That's not to say that these were "bad" jobs, far from it and I'm grateful to the those that trusted me with those projects during that period. It's more that I was producing work that didn't resonate with myself or my own interests, I soon realised that I needed to change something in order to avoid burnout. I've been a passionate fisherman all my life and recently I have extended that passion to learn how to fly fish. It got me thinking... I wanted to go back to producing work that I both enjoyed and was proud to share to a wider audience, until this point I had never photographed of filmed angling before. Ironic as I frequently look at beautiful photographs and films of angling, I'm someone who very much enjoys being outside and so constantly engaging with imagery, video or books that reflect that. Looking for a change in direction I headed to the shore of Lake Vättern with a friend as we attempted to catch a land locked Salmon from the shore, something only possible during late autumn and winter when they come to the waters edge. No real agenda other than to document the day and producing something that could late be used to pitch for work, the end result was this short film and some 35mm images. This would actually lead to some commissioned work and positive conversations, a reminder for me of how important personal work is as a creative. Despite this I don't really know why I never shared this to a wider audience then it struck me, its Friday and so I can imagine a large portion of my network may be heading out fishing or exploring the great outdoors this weekend. Maybe this gives some inspiration for your weekend adventures!
