As cities transition to low speed & car-light mobility, Springtime Design's Marcel Schreuder tells Zag about the design studio’s fully electric, 2000-litre capacity delivery vehicle that fills the sweet spot between cargo bike & small commercial vehicle. Having designed the vehicle for the road, Marcel tells Zag Daily: “Although micromobility solutions like front loader cargo bikes have offered a great new and sustainable alternative for last mile delivery, we can expect cities to inevitably reduce the number of large and heavy cargo vehicles that qualify to run on the bike path." Back-to-Bakfiets… Cargobikes aka Bakfietsen are very popular in Holland. The extended bicycles come in an array of set-up options to suit families, businesses, or as general luggage carriers. But the sidewalks of inner cities in Holland are often swamped with them, they take up a lot of space. This new design allows a normal-sized bicycle to convert to a cargo-carrying bike easily. When there is no cargo, the bike folds away to a standard length. I don’t have any details of the manufacturer, but it looks similar to the Convercycle design (website below). It’s been a month since CargoB’s launch and Zack DeClerck and I had a hunch that people were longing for a new mobility option to make urban living both easier and more enjoyable. As CargoB grows, so will our ability to reduce VMTs and the associated climate, economic, and societal costs. By giving consumers this right-sized vehicle, we're actually expanding their access and ability to enjoy the city.
