On May 30th the Prime Minister ordered that the flag be flown at half-staff in recognition of children lost in the residential schools program. He said it would stay there until indigenous leaders said it could be raised. That was, respectfully, not a wise decision. It delegated an official authority to an undefined collective of private parties. And it set in motion a collision that would inevitably occur, and is now upon us. On Remembrance Day, the flag is lowered to honour Canadians who suffered or died in defending this country. Of course the flag must be raised back to full-staff, before it can be lowered. Recognition of lost indigenous children and our fallen warriors must not be regarded as conflicting values. But that unnecessary conflict will occur unless the PM finds a way to “get permission” to raise the flag in the next 10 days. You don’t need permission. The PM’s order applies to federal government sites, but to no other locations. If you have a flag on your premises and want to lower it on Remembrance Day you can - if you choose - hoist it back up before November 11th. That is not a disrespectful act towards the victims of residential schools but rather, a necessary step to honour those who sacrificed everything so that we might have the liberty to build a more decent society. #TheFlag #RemembranceDay
