If you don't know the history of this one, please look it up. It's fascinating and very important to labor history. 2. The Tower Bridge in London opened to traffic. 3. Norman Rockwell and Jack Benny are born. 4. William Kennedy Dickson receives a patent for motion picture film in the United States. 5. An extreme national economic depression hit the US in 1894 leading to factories closing and mass unemployment and poverty. 6. Chicago Commons was founded on May 1 by Graham Taylor...but this isn't in Wikipedia's "1894" entry - although I can change that, I suppose.

The Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion (OEOI) is launching year two of the Boston Legacy Business Program, a initiative started in 2023 to identify and celebrate 30 iconic businesses per year that have been in operation for more than 10 years. bit.ly/bostonlegacy A "Legacy Business" is defined as those businesses that are long standing, independent enterprises that make a strong contribution to community character. To be designated as a Legacy Business, a business must be operating for at least 10 years in Boston; contribute to the cultural, historical, and societal asset of Boston’s community or neighborhood; and is a business that commits to maintaining its operations in the City once officially designated. ☘ St. Patrick’s Day ☘ always heralds the arrival of fine weather and new beginnings.  It’s no coincidence then, that I was Spring cleaning not only my home, but my LinkedIn profile recently. I got to thinking about the art of storytelling through poems and song and its importance in Irish (and other) cultures, to pass on beliefs, customs and history, long before they were ever written down. Storytelling is still a powerful tool in business and in social contexts to engage your audience, and distinguish yourself. Let's face it, who's is most likely to convince you: someone who rattled off the specifications of their product/service, or someone who tells a story about a problem they solved? While the “limerick” is thought to originate in England and date back to the early 18th century, this mischievous 5-line rhyme was a powerful tool at the time to pass on simple messages. So in the spirit of new beginnings, and just for ☘ St. Patrick's day ☘, a Profile Summary, tongue-in-cheek, with a twist of a limerick;): With ☘ St. Patrick’s Day☘ around the corner, A post on LinkedIn, that indeed could be shorter;), A Paddy’s Day-treat, Hold on to your seat. Starting a business is hard work. It takes time—lots of it, actually—determination, dedication, and commitment. And it helps to have a supportive network full of amazing people who have lots of advice to share and who genuinely want to see you succeed. But having a meaningful netWORK takes work. It means investing your time and attention—consistently—to help it develop and grow. Consistency is key. It’s not just about leveraging it when you need it but consistently reaching out before, after, and during all the times in between. It also means consistently showing up for them because all good networks work both ways in making connections from here to there, this to that, and/or person to person. During a coffee chat with my friend Ted Souder this week, I was reminded of how Chicago as a city stands out amongst its metropolitan peers for its unique and powerful civic network. Chicago, and its people, understand the power of the collective. It’s as though we all live by the motto, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This isn’t a new trend or distinguishing characteristic. This has been a part of Chicago’s identity from the very beginning. It is the reason the 1909 Plan of Chicago was realized when so many other urban plans that Daniel Burnham wrote never materialized. He understood that key to success was galvanizing this incredible civic network to move from traction to action. As he put it: “This spirit — the spirit of Chicago — is our greatest asset. It is not merely civic pride: it is rather the constant, steady determination to bring about the very best conditions of city life for all the people, with full knowledge that what we as a people decide to do in the public interest we can and surely will bring to pass.” Chicago truly understands that concept of “your net-worth is your network.” Looking forward to working with Chicago and some of its top civic leaders to advance and grow our greatest asset as it will be the key to our successes.
