My Brother Steve Stansfield Charity Swim I will be supporting my brother as part of the support crew and will keep people posted live On 27th July 2024 (weather dependent) (Steve says)will be swimming from Spurn Point, to Brighton Slipway, Cleethorpes (tide dependent). To achieve this, I will be swimming, as the tide goes out which will push me out into the North Sea, continuing south across a fast water channel and swimming into Cleethorpes as the tide comes in. This has been an itch that I have needed to scratch for a few years now! The approximate 3 hour swim, is in aid of the local Sunflowers Children’s Action Group. This is a small, volunteer run, local charity formed in 2019 to create special, inclusive activities for children who suffer from Life -limiting and/or life-threatening conditions. I have volunteered for the Sunflowers since its inception and have seen first hand how much the children enjoy the parties and many events which the Sunflowers group hold for the families throughout each year. Due to the children’s life limiting/life threatening conditions they often miss out on parties and special events and many endure harsh and painful treatments. Most have lengthy school absences and lack quality time with families and friends. The children may suffer every day for the rest of their lives and sadly, some face the prospect of much shortened lives. I have been open water swimming for a few years now, in Cleethorpes, long distances in the Lake District and Dock races. It’s taken 3 years of training to get to this point, having to pause to overcome open heart surgery. However, I am determined to achieve my goal to swim the Humber mouth and raise some much needed funds for Sunflowers Christmas party. Are 5K's the key to the future of trail running? Yesterday I was curious about one of the fastest growing races on the platform - Healdsburg Turkey Trot - by Skip Brand and his team. I wanted to know how many of the thousands of runners in this race were new to the UltraSignup platform. So, I asked our data guru - Matt Abbott - to find out. The results - 2/3 of the runners were new to the platform. That's huge. So, that means, because of the efforts of Skip and his team, thousands of people have now had exposure to the broader community of trail adventures. Certainly, many of these runners will race more of Skip's races, but they will also explore races from other directors. This is the power of the community. Skip's efforts to put on a local 5K will have ripple effects across the sport. How far will the ripples go? That's hard to tell. A certain percentage of these racers will sign up for other races in the next weeks, months, and years. They will also brings friends along with them to share the experience with. Then the ripples will extend into their circles of friends. These are network effects in action. So, I would encourage all of our race directors to think about the power of the 5K, even if it's not on a trail. New Years Day resolution runs, St. Paddy day, Firecrackers 5Ks, Turkey Trots, etc. They may be the key to the long-term growth of our sport. Providing these athletes with an entry point into this awesome community is so powerful. Creating an accessible laddering of distances will pay dividends for you and for the sport more broadly. Today is the start of the Boxmoor Virtual Marathon. The challenge is something we’ve been involved with organising at One Impossible Thing. The idea is to run, swim, bike, walk or scoot the 26.2miles/42.2km distance over 10 weeks. I’ve challenged myself to swim at least half of it. That works out at a bit over 2km each week. I’m currently at 1km a week, so I’m going to have to up my game! At least the lake is getting warmer. It was 12 degrees at our last outing. I’ll be shedding my gloves, boots and neoprene hat in no time at all! Surely that will help me propel through the water quicker, therefore swimming further on the same energy levels? Is that scientific? I’m not sure, but that's what it feels like it should do. I’m kicking off my mileage around the lake on Saturday. So it’s not too late to join me in this challenge. We want to have New Earswick Pool as our home for swimming lessons (& more) for a long time to come so we are really excited that the plans (that our Louise got a sneaky peek at a couple of months ago) have now been submitted for approval!! FoNESP have drawn up ambitious plans to totally transform the building which includes: 🏗 Demolition of the existing changing rooms & spectator gallery. 🏗 Creation of a mixed sex community changing village with cubicles. 🏗 Relocation of the spectator gallery to the first floor, accessible by lift & stairs. 🏗 Installation of solar panels, battery back-up & an air heat pump to reduce energy costs & make the pool more sustainable to run! Phew, can you believe the summer is almost over?! In a short few weeks, my daughter Aragsan and I will head back to #Rwanda, and Ishyaka Swim Club will start practice! As we get close, our team shirts have arrived, and donated funds have also helped purchase equipment from our Amazon wish list which were not donated by others. So, what else is going on, you may ask. While Aragsan has been training in the U.S. this summer, her father has been holding down the fort in Rwanda, where he is getting the team ready to hit the ground (OK, water!) at the beginning of September: 1. A dynamic coach, whose #passion has led him to coach on volunteer basis for years, has been brought on board, and will at long last earn a salary for his hard work. 2. Team roster is being finalized, and enthusiastic to start practice. 3. Swimming facilities are being identified for regular practice. In short, everything is being lined up so that as soon as September arrives, we're ready to show Rwanda what Ishyaka - the team of "determination" - is made of. 5 marathons in 5 days? Completely self-supported? Why not... This September, I’m going to be taking on the biggest physical challenge of my life in support of an even bigger cause… I’m going to be running (/walking 🤣) the For Rangers Ultra Marathon this September with Hellie Kellett-Clarke. What is the For Ranger Ultra Marathon you ask? A 230km self-sufficient ultra marathon in Kenya😅😅. That’s over a marathon a day, for 5 days in a row, completely self-supported. Whilst I’m nervous as sin about doing a self-supported race (carrying your own food / sleeping stuff etc) and the Lions 🦁, there are two things I could not be more excited about with this race… Firstly, supporting a wonderful cause in SaveTheRhino. You can see full details in the link in the comments, but there’s so much incredible work this organisation does to combat poaching and ensure the protection of rhinos into the future. Over 1,000 rangers have been killed protecting rhinos in the last ten years alone. These heroes put their lives on the line every single day to fight poaching, but they often lack the funding and equipment they desperately need. That’s where funding massively helps & where I’m excited to be able to support the cause. If you do have anything to spare - I'd be incredibly grateful for any donations towards the mission, and in return, I'll be getting up at silly o'clock to try and get in shape to complete the tricky bit! Any contribution will go a long way in protecting these magnificent animals. Secondly, supporting Hellie Kellett-Clarke. Prior to signing down for 230km back to back, Hellie had never run any type of organised race before. Not even a 5k!
