US Dod is increasingly moving to commercial cloud based solutions for space situational awareness and space traffic management and also communications. The Office of Space Commerce is finally on the cusp of beta testing its Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS), a U.S. government initiative six years in the making. The upcoming test will be a moment of truth for TraCSS, a cloud-based system being developed to provide basic space situational awareness and space traffic coordination services for civil and commercial space operators. The TraCSS project has lagged behind initial timelines, and according to a senior OSC official, its biggest challenges lie not in the complexities of orbital tracking, but in navigating the maze of government bureaucracy. TraCSS is the linchpin for shifting space traffic coordination from the Department of Defense to Commerce, a move mandated by a 2018 presidential directive. FINALLY THE REVOLUTION OF COMMON SENSE "Strictly limiting the uncontrolled reentry of the upper stages can take away the uncertainty of where it might land. This will help mitigate the risk to people on the ground and in flight, says FAA". However the new rule is less revolutionary of what may appear because the old risk threshold of 1x10-4/event for uncontrolled reentry had the same result of forbidding the uncontrolled re-entry of space systems with large mass as typically the case of upper stages. The new rule should be considered instead a first step towards the abolition of the 1x10-4 per event rule, which is meaningless for constellations in which the mass of the single satellite is well below that threshold. An annual risk threshold instead of a threshold per event needs to be introduced for constellations, together with strict rules on proving any claim of design-for-demise.

[After ISS: The Private Space Station Era Is Dawning] There are continual, creaky reminders that the International Space Station is showing its age. Hissy-fit pressure leaks in the Russian segment, loss of attitude control on two separate occasions in 2021. To remain safe and sound for human occupants, the massive structure requires continuous maintenance, a flow of replacement parts, and upgrades to many of the station's systems. Construction of the International Space Station (ISS) began in November 1998. Following a slew of assembly flights, it was built out in July 2011. Now tipping the scale at over 900,000 pounds (408,233 kg), the ISS spans the distance of a football field. It is the largest single human-built structure in space. But along with being humongous and getting on in age, it's expensive to run. "It seems pretty clear that for the foreseeable future commercial space stations, like commercial cargo and commercial crew, will rely on the government not only to help pay for initial investments, but long term services," said Smith. "Whether or not that's 'commercial' is in the eye of the beholder." As for the U.S. government, it clearly does not want to give up its foothold in low Earth orbit, Smith said, and leave China as the only country with a space station. "It's tempting to say Congress and the Administration — whoever is President - will never let there be a space station gap. But then again there was a gap between Apollo and the space shuttle, and between shuttle and commercial crew, so it's not possible to say that with certainty," Smith said. 🛰️ Space Wednesday and Historic Fine for Space Debris 🛰️ A few days ago, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued its first-ever fine for space debris. 📡 US TV provider Dish was ordered to pay $150,000 for failing to move one of its satellites into a safe orbit. This decision is not only symbolic but also carries far-reaching implications for the satellite industry. It sets a precedent for holding satellite operators accountable for leaving dangerous debris in orbit. 💥 The FCC's action may also stimulate the commercial space debris removal market, essentially establishing a price point for companies offering debris removal services. This development could create new opportunities for firms like Astroscale in Japan and ClearSpace in Switzerland. 🌌 As the number of satellites continues to grow, managing space objects and preventing collisions becomes increasingly crucial.
