You don’t have to start a business. There are plenty of other less stressful, more fun ways to make money. Don’t be fooled by what you see online into thinking this is the only way. Follow the well-trodden path for financial success.

A gangster saved my life. Growing up on Old Kent Road in South London, I witnessed a lot of gang violence as a kid. It was a time when even crossing into neighbouring areas like Peckham was a risk. If you know, you know. Being young and naive meant there was a natural desire to fit in. Whilst I never got involved with anything too untoward, I was spending time with the wrong people. I’ll never forget being told by a gangster that I somewhat looked up to: “this life ain’t for you”. Ironically, the same people that lived a lifestyle where you either end up dead or in jail, were the same people rooting for me to make it out. I knew deep down that a life of crime was not the circumstances I was destined for. I knew I’d go onto bigger and better things. That was what sparked my big ambitions from an early age. Fast forward to today, I feel incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved so far - especially because I know that I came from nothing. Even with Fanbytes, Ambrose Cooke and I took pride in knowing we started from zero. Whilst many other founders have had things handed to them on a silver platter — we had to work twice as hard. There’s no limit to what we can achieve as people with the right amount of ambition, hard work and a willingness to learn new things. We are all a product of our environment. You can either allow it to dictate the future, or you can take control of your destiny and strive for better. I chose the latter.

10 things you shouldn’t do as a first time entrepreneur. I made all these mistakes in the hope that you don’t. 1. Don’t assume wealthy people are smarter than you. 2. Don’t take on business partners with no skin in the game. 3. Do not make a decision when you’re emotional. 4. Do not think 1 big hire will solve everything. 5. Do not assume most of business will be exciting. It’s often boring optimising work. 6. Do not assume your competitors are doing THAT well. Most of it is optics. 7. Do not assume your idea is going to sell itself. You must go out and sell. 8. Do not assume it gets easier as you grow. You just get better. 9. Do not assume investors know more than you. 10. You are not “behind.”  You just need more action. You are not “worse” than your competitors.  You just need more action. You are not “a failure” because you haven’t reached your goal.  You just need more action. Everything can be cured by action. So start today.

Shared some tactical advice on building companies to sell

90% of people don’t believe they CAN do something until the opportunity has gone. Truth is, the remaining 10% aren’t typically the smartest. Often your own intelligence obstructs your ability to take chances, risks, and seize opportunities. I’ve said this before in a number of interviews but, naivety is one of the greatest competitive advantages an ambitious person can have. It essentially blinds you from overthinking and focuses your brain on action, instead of analysis. So, next time you’re faced with an opportunity to earn more, learn more, or improve your situation - embrace your naivety. It might just be the jumpstart you needed. 💡
