The new blended whiskey by the Japanese makers was getting noticed and picked by consumers frequently enough… Things have slowed down since then,” says Vikram Jagdish, a Bengaluru-based alcobev retailer about Suntory Global, the Japanese alcobev manufacturer. Known for brands like Jim Beam, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Yamazaki, Hibiki, Toki and Roku, Suntory Global has been present in India for over three decades. While globally it is renowned for its premium single malts, in India the company is popular for its bridge-to-premium IMFL, Teacher’s scotch. However, despite its long-standing presence, the company has a barely sizeable market share in India, which is primarily limited to premium-pricing segment. To shake things up, it decided to launch Oaksmith nearly five years ago, but is yet to witness the desired result. “The company pushed and did some marketing activation campaigns when they launched the brand. Of late, things have slowed down considerably with almost no push from the company. I sell about 5 cases (each case has 12 bottles of 750ml, that is a total of 9l) of Oaksmith and Oaksmith Gold together in a month now. The company is no longer pushing the brand like they used to.
