Did someone say neurological and musculoskeletal system? We sure did on Day 3 of Future Doctors of America! There’s nothing like hands-on experience. Our students learned casting, enjoyed a lively game of Bingo, honed their skills in resume, and explored the intricacies of the musculoskeletal system. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store for them! #FutureDoctors #TMCInnovation #MedicalEducation #Cardiology 📸DiscoverU Fantastic Learning Opportunities

📚 New #OpenAccess Publication in The Strategic Management Society Sunkee Lee & Jisoo Park (2024) Giving up learning from failures? An examination of learning from one's own failures in the context of heart surgeons Link: https://lnkd.in/dhznWQ48 Abstract: We reassess existing theories on individual failure learning and propose an inverted-U-shaped relationship between an individual's accumulated failures and learning, based on a theoretical framework that jointly considers the opportunity, motivation, and perceived ability to learn. Using data on 307 California-based cardiothoracic surgeons who performed coronary artery bypass graft surgeries in 133 hospitals between 2003 and 2018, we find compelling evidence that individuals reach a threshold at which they discontinue learning from their own failures. We also find that this threshold is higher for surgeons who had higher perceived ability to learn. This article aims to shed new light on the relationship between individuals' failure experience and their learning, and advance our understanding of the microfoundations of organizational learning, an important basis of firm performance. #emergencymedicineday was dedicated to students at Philipps-Universität Marburg in preparation for their neuranatomy exam. Stab wounds in the spine and explanation of Brown-Sequard-Syndrome, peripheral vs. central vertigo and parapontine reticular formation (PPRF), internuclear ophtalmoplegia (INO) and brain stem anatomy, peripheral nerve blocks in injuries, facial blocks in wound management, aphasia syndromes in stroke or cerebral arteries and stroke (PICA, Wallenberg Syndrome), pain receptors and management, syringomyelia and lateral spinothalamic tract, and much more. So complex - so interesting - so important. Pleasure to explain why it is important what students have to learn for their patients.

Professor of Digital Health, Consultant Trauma and Upper Limb surgeon, Clinical lead for trauma surgery, at the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic centre and executive medical director of Smart Health Centre
We are planning an international webinar for trainees/residents that would be targeting younger generations in orthopaedics. Which topics would you suggest to cover? Thinking of talks on writing up papers, presentations, fellowship interviews etc. Talks will be given by top notch surgeons in the field. Any more ideas you think we should be covering?

✨Rounding up the final year of Med School ✨ Counting down a month time to begin writing my final papers in Med school and i've been feeling different kinds of emotions 🥹😩, ranging from Anxiety to fear and even imposter syndrome, its been a whirlwind of emotions here🚑 The #Clinical rotation in different #specialties this year has helped me learn some things about myself🤔, one of which is i gravitate towards Medicine 💊 than Surgery 🗡, even the difference in pay grade is not enough to pull me. 🫢Lets not sugarcoat the thrill of final year though - legit the year of stress and excitement. Trying to balance life tasks; like side hustles that add 💰 💸to my bag, also family and social responsibilities, has been quite a juggling act. But i try to remind myself this is the culmination of years of Hardwork and dedication, and I am more than equipped to finish this race head-on ( we don’t give up here)💪💪. i will be sure to keep you all updated on my #journey and my #learnings handling my #emotions and scaling through academically,as i conclude this phase. For those #navigating Final phases in any area of life, maybe high school, college, science school, or even online school. Cheers to finishing well and finishing strong🥂. #medicine #FinalyearMBBS #impostersyndrome #surgery #finalyear

#futurefriday: promoting #diversity in Surgery "By acknowledging the challenges faced by students from diverse educational #backgrounds, we can promote a more inclusive and diverse #futuregeneration of academic surgeons" In this recent publications by Reagan Collins et al. in JAMA Surgery challenges faced by students from diverse institutional backgrounds in pursuing academic surgery were discussed. doi:10.1001/jamasurg.2024.1506 The authors formulated several recommendations to promote institutional diversity in general surgery residency, for students 👨🎓 and institutions 🏥 . Some of the examples: 🏥 --> Conduct a holistic review of all applicants. Consider not only academic achievements but also personal qualities, experiences, and potential for growth. 🏥 --> Standardize and increase transparency of the applicant review process. 👨🎓 --> Establish, grow, and maintain connections external to your institution to expand your network of support. 👨🎓 --> Seek out involvement in national surgical associations. Concluding with a proposal for a #holistic approach to evaluate residency applicants, ensuring equitable consideration for all aspiring academic surgeons, the authors give some food for thought on how we could select our future colleagues #futuresurgeon Future Surgeon Groene Hart Ziekenhuis Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde VAGH De Jonge Specialist Dutch Surgical Society for Medical Students Thaís Tweed Hajar Rotbi Maarten Lijkwan Lianne Mulder 🇵🇸 Jamiu O.
