Thanks to funding from Federal Railroad Administration, our team has continued to consider novel ways to monitor track health leveraging novel 3D Laser Triangulation data from the Pavemetrics Systems Inc. LRAIL system. Our most recent paper on the topic led by RailTEC at Illinois Alum Ian Germoglio Barbosa, M.Sc. E.I.T. has just been published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part F: Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit. The paper presents the development of Track Component Heath Indices (TCHIs) (i.e., quantitative values that objectively assess track condition and provide a means to monitor condition change with time and tonnage). The TCHIs rely on railway track mechanics, high axle load (HAL) railroad engineering practical judgment, and FRA regulations. Thanks to our industry partners involved BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, CSX as well as MxV Rail for additional field support. And finally, thanks to Arthur Lima and J. For this purpose, we have set up a test configuration with glass pipelines to be able to observe the processes closely. We also presented the experiment during our Altenstädter Kältetage. The ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Turbo Expo is back for the 2024 edition and at Ergon Research we are excited to attend it again! This year we are presenting another outcome of HPacC-WIND (FF4EUROHPC project), co-partnered by Galebreaker and CINECA, and funded by FF4EuroHPC under the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). In the last years, a #CFD methodology was developed to determine the impact of wind speed and direction on the performance of Air-Cooled Condensers (ACC). In addition, the presence of porous wind screens was modelled to assess their benefits on the power plant performance. At the end of the project, a #digitaltwin was created, combining the ACC heat transfer performance predicted by CFD, a thermodynamic model of the steam cycle and appropriate weather forecasts. This way, it was possible to estimate the payback period for the investment in windshields, which was always less than a year for the selected locations. Here, Rene Just Nielsen and Thomas Egsgaard Pedersen will present their paper "Electrode boiler model for ancillary service simulation" explaining some of the dynamic modelling principles applied for process and control systems development in Added Values. ➡The PAPER ABSTRACT may act as an appetizer: “A generic component-based model of an industrial electrode boiler with internal control systems is presented. A mechanic modelling approach was taken to include as much process and control information as possible and to generate detailed simulation results. The model is intended for qualitative studies of electrode boiler dynamics in the context of district heating generation and power grid ancillary services in collaboration with other electric power consuming units. An example boiler control scheme is designed and included in the simulation model as this is paramount to the dynamic response of the system.
