🇸🇬 Happy National Day, Singapore! A nation renowned for its knowledge-driven, resilient, and forward-looking spirit. Wishing all my Singaporean friends and colleagues continued success and prosperity. In the West, we can certainly admire—and perhaps envy—how you consistently turn dreams into reality. Singapore is the prime example of science-based country and the justification why other small nations should not stop dreaming.

Upon learning of the opportunity for my family's business to collaborate with the local government in 泉州 to rekindle and foster bonds through our business offerings, I realised that it must transcend mere economic benefits. When I proposed the idea of showcasing our offerings in China to my in-laws (Dance Ensemble Singapore, 新加坡聚舞坊), I anticipated that it would serve as a gateway to numerous future opportunities for us to not only strengthen bilateral relations, but also to establish long-term partnerships. What I hadn't anticipated was the rapid expansion of this venture, extending beyond 泉州 to garner interest from across China in our cultural and artistic scene. The potential is truly remarkable. Given the constraints of limited resources and team capacity, it took slightly over a year for us to negotiate terms and conditions and ultimately execute the initial phase of our venture. This marks the beginning of our journey towards fostering a sustainable future of growth, extending beyond our individual capabilities. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported us on this journey thus far. Hopefully, in the near future, we will be able to unveil more about what lies ahead. Next Monday, the 1st of July, is Keti Koti. It is a day of great significance to me, as it is the commemoration and celebration of the end of slavery in Surinam and the former Dutch Antilles. It is a day where I emphasize the necessity to remember the Dutch history, in its totality. I understand the time we live in is one of transition, into creating a complete narrative of our common Dutch heritage, and this comes with uncomfortable conversations and self-reflection for all of us. A couple of years ago, I requested my then employer for a company wide day off on the 1st of July. I was met with a counter-offer: a day of shared learning for all colleagues who were interested. At first I was hesitant, what if no one cared? But I said yes, as I felt we had to start somewhere. We created a day filled program, where colleagues could soak up history, ask questions and attend the Keti Koti festival. The team showed up. This openness and willingness to learn from both sides was heartwarming and made me feel seen - as a human, as opposed to an employee. We all have a responsibility in shaping this heritage, which should not happen behind closed doors. This is a conversation that should be had in every space of our country, irrespective of location or sector. In honour of the 1st of July, I implore you to take the responsibility to educate one another on this topic and create an understanding that our story - how we choose to live and work together - is far from complete. We all actively choose who to remember and who to forget. If my ancestors’ stories are irrelevant to our history, what does that mean for our future? On May 24, the Forum on Building up China’s Cultural Strength 2024 continued at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. During the Sub-Forum on Cultural Strength and Development Opportunities of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Louis Kwok Lit Yu, Former President of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, compared culture to a pot of soup. He explained that Lingnan culture and "Bay Area culture" are like a soup with various ingredients. By properly utilizing these elements with the right temperature, mixing, fermentation, and accumulation, Bay Area culture can quickly develop into a rich and vibrant broth.
