Interesting article on the growth of Chinese whisky distilleries. The argument is that despite the risk of increasing tension between China and the West, there is an opportunity for whisky to take a bigger market share from baijiu. There is a desire for homegrown success stories in China. If these distilleries are able to produce a high-quality product, they're likely to get domestic support. The electric vehicle market makes a good comparison. Personally, I find the recent boom in 'world whiskies' absolutely fantastic. A rising tide raises all ships 🥃 https://lnkd.in/gtZC6JD6

As we have been discussing in our business meeting recently @ Whisky Cask Club the growth of China into the Whisky business is only just beginning. In 2022, sales of whisky in China were valued at $2.3bn, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. That figure is expected to almost triple by 2027 as the whisky market there is expected to grow at around five times the rate seen globally. Those sales are being driven by young, middle class, urban, educated and increasingly female drinkers. https://lnkd.in/gxygt5-n #alternativeinvestments #whiskylovers #whisky #liquidgold #singlemalt #whiskycasks

Whisky takes a shot at China's baijiu-dominated market The Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for gathering with family and friends to eat and drink. And for hundreds of years, the drink of choice in China for these celebrations has been baijiu - a clear spirit made with fermented grains which packs a potent punch. Baijiu is also often drunk straight and at social events such as weddings and birthdays. Its Alcohol-By-Volume (ABV) can top 60% - in comparison spirits like scotch whisky and tequila typically have an ABV of around 40%. "Baijiu certainly still has its place in Chinese liquor consumption, even among young consumers," says Allison Malmsten, public research director at Daxue Consulting. It accounts for well over 90% of China's spirits sales, with annual sales of around $160bn (£127bn). However, in recent times drinks from abroad have been growing in popularity in what is the world's biggest spirits market. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland https://lnkd.in/gEDry8ff

Japan’s whisky industry differs from its Scottish counterpart in several ways but perhaps the most notable change is the lack of trade between competitors. In Scotland, casks are traded from one company to the next, with stocks constantly changing hands to feed the various brands of blended Scotch. In Japan, however, a whisky producer must make all their own components in-house. If a new flavour profile is required for a blend, they have to make it themselves. In 1961, Nikka imported a Coffey still from Scotland, to allow them to produce grain whisky and 8 years later, a second malt distillery followed in Miyagikyo. The company expanded further in 1989 with the acquisition of Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland. Recent years brought some damaging revelations in the form of news that several bottles branded as Japanese Whisky, did in fact consist largely of imported spirit from Scotland and even Canada. Nikka’s popular From the Barrel blend, was one of many said to contain Scotch whisky. The company entered into talks with other prominent Japanese whisky producers and the result was the creation of the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Associaion. The group set out a series of rules that would define Japanese whisky and ensure that products labelled as produced in Japan were exactly that. The global popularity of Japanese whisky is a relatively recent phenomenon but whilst the peak of the fever pitch seems to have passed, prices remain high and many expressions are rarer than hen’s teeth. For my own part, I’ve infrequently dabbled with Japanese whisky but must confess that all too often I’ve been left feeling underwhelmed by the experience. Perhaps that’s because the ridiculous prices inflate my expectations. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to becoming acquainted with this Travel Retail expression, a sample of which was included in an Advent Calendar sent to me by Bevvy. https://lnkd.in/eWvYTrg7

Was a pleasure sharing insights with Katie Silver of BBC - everyone is asking, with the rise of foreign liquors in China, what's the future of Chinese Baijiu? Here's my take: 🥃 Baijiu has a special place in Chinese culture, and is consumed straight at social gatherings, especially between men 🥃 Foreign spirits, on the other hand, dominate China's rising cocktail and mixology scene, which is increasingly popular among Women Rather than replacing one another, they are expanding and diversifying drinking opportunities 🥃 What about whiskey? Last year we found that it's a male dominated market, but this year we see a rise in female drinkers💁🏻♀️ Who are Chinese whiskey drinkers: 🥃 70% are between 26 and 40 years old 🥃 Half earn over 20,000 RMB a month, making them high-earners by China's standards. 🥃 79% of them reside in tier-1 or new-tier-1 cities. 🥃 Whiskey drinkers drink more frequently than consumers of other alcohols *data from a recent survey by Daxue Consulting's public research department #Chinamarket #WineandSpirits #Whiskey https://lnkd.in/dTZBBpS2

As I savor a glass of Japanese whisky, a cherished gift from our dear godchildren upon their return from Japan, we are reminded of the remarkable journey of whisky and Wagyu beef in Japanese culture. This whisky, with its complex flavors and smooth finish, is a testament to Japan’s exceptional craftsmanship, a trait they bring to many of their endeavors, despite not having a longstanding tradition in whisky distillation or cattle raising. Japan’s foray into whisky began in the early 20th century, with the first commercial distillery, Yamazaki, established in 1923. Drawing inspiration from Scottish whisky-making, Japanese distillers have honed their craft with a focus on precision, patience, and the use of unique local ingredients. The result is a range of whiskies that are now celebrated worldwide for their elegance and balance. In a similar vein, Wagyu beef, especially the Kobe variety, has gained international acclaim. Wagyu, which translates to “Japanese cow,” involves breeds that are genetically predisposed to intense marbling. The cattle are reared with meticulous care, ensuring a diet and environment that contribute to the meat’s renowned tenderness and flavor. Both these products - the whisky in my glass and the esteemed Wagyu beef - exemplify Japan’s dedication to quality and excellence. This commitment is mirrored across various Japanese industries, where meticulous attention to detail and a relentless pursuit of perfection are consistently evident. This glass of Japanese whisky, a thoughtful gift, not only offers a delightful experience but also serves as a reminder of Japan’s remarkable ability to excel in fields new to their culture, be it whisky production or Wagyu beef rearing.
