The theme of this Nurses Week is “Nurses Make a Difference!” Its motto, #NursesLightUpTheSky, honors their key role in helping to brighten patient lives. Nurses exemplify what it means to make a difference by triaging sensitive situations, collaborating across disciplines, seeing a person in context, and advocating for patient rights. When we or our loved ones are hurt or scared, a nurse's calm compassion can be a great source of solace. As the pandemic reshaped work, managers found themselves thrust into similar roles of emotional first responders, a role for which none of us were trained. Employee needs have only increased since then. Below, Angela Sigal Poock (who was one of the Harvard University Heroes in 2018) and I share how learning from nurses can remind managers of the key role they play in attempting to make a difference. We also share how to support these caregivers. Like managers, nurses are shock absorbers – pressured from the top by performance imperatives, challenged by turnover and understaffing, and affected by increasing human distress across all demographics. This week - during National Nurses Week - we acknowledge the contributions of our 17,000 nurses across Dignity Health California and asked nurses to share their “Why?” As we close the week, I would be remiss if I didn’t share my why. What’s your why? My choice to embark on this path signifies a commitment to making a tangible difference in people's lives, to be a beacon of hope in moments of uncertainty, and to advocate tirelessly for the well-being of those in your care. In the chaotic tapestry of healthcare, you are the steady hand that navigates with wisdom, integrity, and resilience. Being a nurse leader is more than a career; it's a calling—a calling to lead with humility, to listen with empathy, and to act with purpose. It's about fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning, where every member of the healthcare team feels valued and supported. In a world where compassion often feels scarce, I choose to amplify it. In a profession where challenges abound, I choose to confront them head-on. In a field where leadership is needed, I choose to step up and lead by example. My choice to be a nurse leader is not just about the roles we fulfill or the titles we hold; it's about the lives we touch, the hearts we heal, and the legacy we leave behind. We, as nurses, remain the most trusted profession in the USA for the 22nd consecutive year. Nearly four out of five Americans rated their trust in us as "high" or "very high." But our ratings are falling, not because we're less trustworthy, but because of unsafe workplaces, burnout, and barriers to care that many of us experience in our workplaces. Despite these hardships, Jennifer Mensik Kennedy PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN speaks to nurses' strength and impact on patients. What happens to nurses happens to patients. We are the experts on what we need to do our jobs to remain the most trusted profession in 2024.
