Most students do not know what it takes to get a job. For the longest time it was assumed that getting a degree was a ticket to a successful career. You simply graduate and recruiters will be bitting at the bit to hire you. But today this is just not the reality. Hiring managers want to see real applicable skills. They want candidates that already have applicable experience. Experience is the key word. Students need to do more than just demonstrate understanding of what they are learning in the classroom. They need to go and do those things in the real world. Accountanting students can go and do book keeping or tax work for a small local CPA firm. Finance students could work at a local private equity or CRE firm. Marketing students could get a role running their schools sports teams social media pages. There are hundreds of ways for students to get experience before leaving their university. It is imperative that students do so they can land the job that they want and that they have worked so hard to get. They said most people don't work full-time while going to college. I did...working 52 hours a week with a full course load, and graduated manga cum laude. They said most students can't get a loan without a co-signer. I did. (See 52 hours of work) They said most grads won't find a job post-college because of the 2007 recession. I did...joining KPMG through a job posting on Monster. They say most small businesses fail within the first year. stage is entering its second year (in one month). They say personal life should be kept out of #business to be professional. I wrote about working while #parenting during the COVID lockdown. It is my most-read post. They say there are specific ways to #networking. I created FCK* DOING. ALL. THE. THINGS for moms in the #legal industry. They said once you get into #legalmarketing, you never leave. Well… that part is still true, and I am doing it a little differently now. Don't let others dictate what you can and cannot do. What are you allowing others to define for you?

Does Your College Major Really Matter? 🎓   Yes and no.   Employers often seek candidates with direct experience. However, for recent college graduates who may not have extensive job experience, classroom knowledge still counts as valuable knowledge.   Aligning your studies with the job market you intend to enter can be most advantageous for landing employment quickly. However, if your major doesn't directly relate to your target job, highlighting your minor or specific coursework on your resume can be incredibly beneficial.   For example, a Liberal Arts Major with a Finance Minor might not seem like a straightforward fit for an Accounting career. However, including relevant coursework such as Principles of Accounting I & II, Intermediate Accounting I & II, Federal Income Tax I & II, Principles of Auditing, Accounting Information Systems, and Managerial and Cost Accounting, etc. demonstrates a stronger commitment and suitability for the role.   This strategy strengthens your credibility for the position you're applying for and helps you stand out to recruiters. 👶 Do young people still find accountancy and finance an exciting career prospect? 👶 🎓 Yesterday, I had a conversation with a recently placed candidate. They're quite senior so have been in the game a while. ❓ The conversation was around the fact that there seems to be a distinct lack of young people, certainly "homegrown" talent that seem to be coming through the interview process. 🛩 There is a huge surge in overseas candidates applying for junior roles but for some reason, we don't seem to be encouraging young people in our education system to join the accountancy and finance sector. 🤷♀️ Is that due to other industries and jobs being a lot "sexier"? 🙅♂️ Is the accountancy industry a dying industry? 👋 Would be interested to hear from someone who considered accountancy and then decided not to pursue it. ⁉ As a Hiring Manager, are you finding the same?? #accountancy #homegrown #talent #pjtgroup
