Hot take: I’m *astonished* Apple approved Microsoft Co-Pilot, an app so poorly designed and/or simply nonfunctional that I honestly can’t even tell when it’s working as designed. (Yes, that’s an actual screenshot. What’s funny: it actually generated quite a long treatise at first — more about the ways to use it than its actual interface, tho. Have you noticed how every app will now offer word completion? Great, wonderful. Sometimes the suggestions are even useful. What button to do type to accept the suggestion? Microsoft Word wants a right arrow. Apple mail wants you to hit the space. If you do the wrong thing. both programs take away the suggestion and don't offer them again. Is there an RFC for this? Could we have some discussion and standardization on how this works? It is really challenging to learn and work with multiple, incompatible systems that operate at level of muscle memory. #usability #ux

Two competing visions. Apple vs Google. On a visit to Google in 2019, I was luck to get a tour. Unexpectedly my host compared the competitors visions of future. It sticks with me to this day. In a previous post on the future of design, some designers asked about the visions I'm seeing. That post will take a little longer to pull together, but I wanted to share this today. Walking around Palo Alto my host said something like this: "Apple sees the future as conspicuous objects that are always present. Google sees the future as diffused technology that blends into the background." Diffuse Design vs Conspicuous Design. Two different visions of the future. Hey, Microsoft. I applied to your ad but your website doesn't work. I got:— {"ERROR":"MissingServletRequestParameterException: Required request parameter 'originUrl' for method parameter type String is not present"} It's a decent error message, as far as error messages go, but this is not a good experience, overall. Spitting out error messages to the user is never a good user experience. Always handle errors. I'd be happy to fix this for you. How can I apply? Thanks. #UX #UI

𝗔𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴? We've all been there: trusting Google Maps to get us to our destination, only to make a wrong turn and end up with a completely different route. While I appreciate Google Maps automatically recalculating, sometimes it can be overwhelming! Wouldn't it be great if the app gave us a clearer heads-up when we go off course? Here are some ideas: A prominent notification like "Wrong turn detected!" to grab our attention. Highlighting the part of the route where we deviated from the original plan. A confirmation prompt before switching to a completely new route, asking if we want to continue via the new way. What do you think? Was going through the material design 3 guidelines. There is M1 & M2 versions as well. I am going through all one by one as all are important I found an error on the page below but these are negligible. I am not criticizing Google but it is a standard design system followed by some major apps like #Youtube #Gmail #GoogleDrive #Uber etc. In the bottom red outlined box should have written 3 & 4 in place of 1 & 2 respectively. I didn't expect this mistake from Apple! Never break native UI behavior! Your users have learned how to open a page in a new tab. This is especially useful when comparing multiple products, like the watch bands in this video. Let users decide whether they want to open a page in a new tab or not. Don't take that away from them! #ux #a11y #webdevelopment
