You might want to sign up to my mailing list to get a short, useful email from me once a week. https://lnkd.in/etMH2npB Here is a recent example on the topic of digital wellbeing: It's gone midnight, you are trying to sleep, and your phone pings or vibrates on your bedside table. Maybe not just once, maybe dozens of times an hour occasionally! I'm no expert on sleep, but I have a feeling this isn't an ideal situation. Luckily your phone has digital wellbeing tools. On android open settings and search for 'Bedtime' or on iOS search for 'Sleep'. Set your bedtime hours - make sure your important contacts are 'starred' or favourites so they can reach you while your phone is in do not disturb mode. On android when your phone is in bedtime mode the entire display goes into greyscale. Peace at last! :) Now to question whether having your phone in the bedroom at night is even a good idea!? Personally, I use my phone to listen for videos and podcasts at night, so leaving it in another room would have drawbacks, but maybe the benefits of not having it within arms reach in the morning would outweigh the inconvenience.

So, apparently it is national video game day. I didn't know that was a thing haha. I am curious, fellow LinkedIn connections, what are your favourite games? And any deep cuts I should check out, maybe they're on offer during the steam summer sale, maybe!
Working with new startup businesses looking to make a splash 💦 with their logo and branding. looking for a refresh or need artwork? 🖼 i'm here to help get you noticed in a sea of faces. so let's chat 🐙
As it's #NationalVideoGameDay i thought i'd be able to show off a view illustrations i did the other year, some personal, some commission work. Being a gamer all my life, i've played 1000's of games - i must admit modern games don't really interest me as much as some of the titles i used to play in my yuff - could say rose tinted glasses but times where simpler back then!! lol When i find i have 30mins to myself, boot up a black from the past, like Rez / MSR / Soul Calibur - pretty much anything from the dreamcast / saturn. Am sure i must know some gamers out in the linkedin world so my question to you - what's your reach for title to play? ps don't tell Olly, these are using my brand and not his ;) #Gamer

I've put together a free 6 point SEO guide available as a PDF when you sign up to my mailing list! It will come through as an email to you within a few mins. https://lnkd.in/eq_ixjFr The tips are aimed at those of you who haven't really done much SEO on your site, or have had a go a while ago and aren't too sure how well you've done!? It's just 1 and a half pages and features a number of asides/notes that expand a bit on the 6 main tips. You can likely implement a lot of the advice in between 45 and 90 minutes. A deeper dive would likely take 6-8hrs. By the way: I quite like data, so, I just crunched the numbers, and I see that my clients see better search positioning (in between 1-6 months) on average of 9.21 positions - e.g. moving from mid page 2 to mid page 1, or from bottom of page 1 to the top!

Mark's post about lock-out networking here echoes many of my own feelings on the subject. tldr; I'm not a fan of lock-outs. I want to meet other people from my industry when I am networking!
Helping businesses stand out from their competition in a crowded marketplace – for all the right reasons
Several networking groups use a version of 'Lockout' to demonstrate value to being a member. i.e They will tell you that they only allow a certain number of 'seats' per industry in their events (often just one) so that you won't have lots of competition in the meeting. For me this misses the point of networking and is also a bit of a fallacy. 1. Group owners/leaders will often find ways to bend their own rule if it suits them to get another paying member (i.e I've heard of groups with multiple lawyers - but one is 'family law' another is 'contracts' another is 'disputes' etc) 2. What does it matter whether your competition is 'in the room' or not - you don't live in the room. As soon as you leave the competition is all out there in the real world 3. There is generally plenty of work out there for most industries - it's not easy to find, but your competitors are not hoarding it all for themselves 3. MOST IMPORTANT BIT: I truly believe that the benefit of 'collaboration' vastly outweighs any concept of 'competition'. We all need help from time to time and developing trusted relationships with those in the same industry really pays dividends as evidenced by this great testimonial from fellow designer Marie-Louise O'Neill. I in turn have asked her to help me with client projects and it is great to have her as a trusted partner. I should say that although I tend to avoid lockout groups for all the reasons above, there are exceptions to the rule. I joined a networking group run by Edit Gardner many years ago that I am still with as it is a great group, but I joined *despite* it being a lockout, not *because* of it. The attractions of the group outweighed my concerns around lockout, and the 'rule' within the group is not draconian, a member can elect to allow a 'competitor' to join if they so wish, as I have done before. It's just that the general way that it is presented is that it is an incredible benefit and 'locking out' your competitors is a valuable thing to do, and I am not convinced it is.

Always assume that your computer is about to die from some kind of hardware or software malfunction, it could be right now. Maybe on a busy Friday morning or late sunday night while it's running updates. Keep everything in a device-agnostic system, so 'WHEN' your computer dies it's no problem, you'll seamlessly continue on a different device. My computer did a mini-death last Monday*, and while it was annoying, that was all it was, as everything I need I can access via various cloud based services. Make things easy for yourself and form good data habits and save a lot of stress! *It was actually about 2 months ago - this is a recycled post from my mailing list! Which you should sign up for by the way ;)

Something from my mailing list, The Tom Stevens Report, from a few weeks ago: Ever struggled with taking a screenshot of a webpage due to having more content to capture than fits in the window at one time? I'd previously done things like zoomed out and gone into fullscreen mode (the F11 key toggles that if you were wondering!) and even stitched together screenshots in photoshop... But there must be a better way - there is. Use Edge Wow, not something I say very often, haha. But in Edge you can click on the three dots to bring up the settings/menu and select Web Capture (or ctrl+shift+s) then select Capture Full Page. There is similar functionality in Firefox when you right click on a page. But, when I tested both I found that the screenshots in Firefox were quite large on the file size (like 7MB vs 1.6MB from Edge in one example). So, if you want to email the screenshots, then Edge is the way to go. I haven't tried on a Mac (apparently you can easily save a webpage as a PDF from File > Export) but not sure what sort of file size these come out as? Let me know by reply if you know! :) Sign up if you would like to get my short (this is about the longest one so far I think!) weekly email: https://lnkd.in/etMH2npB

Say hello to my daughter, Penny. Born just two weeks ago. I couldn't be happier! She is undecided whether she likes my singing or not :'D I've been a bit slower to reply to messages lately and likely will for a few more weeks! Here is a photo of her tiny hand. :)
